Bellow Sealed & Piston Valve
Introduction - Bellow Sealed ValveIndexBellow Sealed Valves are a new breed of Industrial process valves,
designed to eliminate Valve leakage and also known as 'Zero Leak
Valves' or 'Emission Free Valves.'
In these valves, conventional gland packing is supplemented by a
metallic Bellow Cartridge joined to the valve bonnet at one end, and the
stem at the other end. A bellow is a long accordion-like tube. As the
valve stem strokes, the bellow expands or compresses with the stroke
movement. There are no sliding or rotating seals through which process
fluid can pass.
Thus the fluid will enter the valve from the seat of the valve & come in
contact with the bellow, but will not come in contact with the stem. Since
the stem is the only moving part in the valve, it is a source of potential
leakage through the gland due to constant friction caused by the axial
movement.
In a bellow sealed valve this potential leak is totally avoided due to the
metallic bellow which blocks the leak path effectively by not allowing the
media to come in contact with the stem and thus the gland.
A bellow is the heart of this type of valve. There are two types of bellows:
formed and welded leaf.
Dangerous fluids are a permanent menace to man and environment.
Leakages need to be avoided during operation. The ever-increasing
concern for environmental issues has led to use of both leakage and
maintenance free bellows sealed valves.
Bellows sealed valves guarantee Zero leakage to atmosphere and
therefore is an efficient and economic contributor towards security of our
surroundings.

Reliable durability because bellows are produced from a single piece of metal. Guaranteed 10,000 cycles or more life cycle
Because of wide opening between plies of bellows, bellow compression function will not be impaired bybits of foreign matter in fluid.
Easy to test for quality, bellow can be produced with uniform quality.
Shape of Convolution
Durability
Suitability for use in valve
Quality control
Formed BellowsType Welded Bellows
Of doubtful reliability because of a number of welded joints. Plies can be affected by Heat, and thus cycle life is hard to predict.
Wedge-shaped openingbetween plies will trap foreign matter in fluid, leading to bellow failure.
Very difficult to inspectwelded spots for quality, hence quality difficult to control.
Bellows seal valves are Zero emission and maintenance free. An uninterrupted
metallic barrier is positioned between the piping and the environment. The
components that during valve operation are subject to relative movements are welded
onto the extremities of a metallic bellows that absorbs and compensates the shiftings.
Hence these valves are suitable for any fluid and are recommended when Zero
emission characteristics are required to protect the environment and the health of the
workers from pollutive leaks, to prevent expensive wastes due to loss of energy and
fluid, and to eliminate the not negligible cost of replacement of the packing. In
conclusion, the valves are particularly suitable for dangerous, inflammable, lethal and
explosive media.
The particular characteristics of these valves have been obtained by means of correct
sizing and material selection, by a shrewd and long test in laboratory and plants
under severe working conditions allowed by the rating, and a quality system. The
adopted bellows are fully in compliance and are made of Austenitic stainless steel or
Hastelloy. The life (corresponding to the number of cycles) is much longer than that
required by the relative standards. Generally bellows Seal Valves are fitted with rising
not rotating stem to avoid additional torsional stresses on the bellows.
?Valve body in cast or forged construction to suit your requirements.
?Spindle with bellow assembly easily replaceable-easy of maintenance.
?Gland packing available as standard in addition to bellow – to arrest any gland leakage in the event of bellow damage.
?Wide choice of bellow materials – including inconnel, Hastalloy, Monel, etc.
?External pressurization of bellow – leading to longer bellow life.
?Welding of bellow done under most stringent conditions.
lBellows selected for higher stroke length than necessary – ensures longer life of bellows.
lTemperature compensation considered as standard during sizing and selection of bellows.
Formed bellows – which is made with the help of rolling a flat metal sheet into a tube with longitudinal fusion welding, in
short the tube is hydraulically formed into bellows with rounded and widely faced folds.
Welded Leaf type bellows – It is a washer like plate of thin metal which are welded together. The common difference
between Formed bellows and Welded leaf type bellows are as follows.
There are two types of bellows:

3 Piece Design
The more commonly used bellows is a Formed type instead of welded because of its advantages.
For better flow characteristics.
Are bellows seal globe valves can be provided with encapsulated bellows, which are protected from particles,
velocity of following media, and bellow erosion etc. thus ensuring long life of bellow.
These 3 pieces design accommodate any length of bellow with no change in body/bonnet pattern.
Valves with bellows designed for higher cycles are available on request.
Special design can be used for chlorine application
It has been proven through various studies about process plant emissions that 75% of leakages cause:
1) Environment pollution.
2) Production loss
3) Process problems and
4) Energy loss.
Bellow Seal Valves are highly recommended for Thermion - 66, down herm vapor, hot oil, HTM, Vacuum, Steam,
Ammonia, Refrigerant, Phosgene, Chlorine, Hydrogen, Oxygen, CO, Hazardous and Poisonous Liquids / Gases,
Radioactive substances etc.

CONVENTIONAL VALVES
Gland packing
None
Very common. Due to the design conditions, gland leakage occurs with in a few cycles, no matter which make valve or what quality of gland packing
Needs to be replaced very often
High
Considerable amount through gland leakages. Normally large amount when leakage remains unattended.
Very high for replacing gland packing
Very High .Gland packing needs to be replaced /repacked often. This cost along with equipment down time, man hours spent etc. very high.
Very Low -in Months. Due to Leakage through gland, certain parts erode, making the valve irreparable after some months, Valves needs to be replaced
Highly unsafe especially when the media is hazardous and poisonous.
Initially low but very high after some years if cost of packing, downtime, man-hours spent, number of valves replaced etc are taken into account.
PISTON VALVES
Piston ring
None
Occurs as soon as the rings (which are made of gasket material) wear out.
Rings need to be Changed frequently
Very high
Large in case of leaks
Very High for replacing rings
High as rings need to be changed atleast once in six months
Low.
Can be used only for limited media like low pressure steam, hot water etc.
High compared to the benefits

The Piston valve is seat less and glandless valve. At the
heart of the piston valve are piston and sealing rings. A
burnished piston seals against metal reinforced graphite
rings to achieve leak proof shutoff. This unique design
ensures long life even at temperature up to 800°F (427°C).
Seal tightness in a piston valve is obtained by a cylindrically
shaped plug, connected to a spindle, and operated by the
actuating force, which enables it to move through thinner
diameter of two packing rings. When the piston is in the high
piston, that is, held by only the upper valve ring, (which also
ensures tightness to the atmosphere), the valve is open.
When the piston is lowered and is held in place by both the
upper and lower valve rings (and thus ensuring seat
tightness between the valve inlet and outlet), the valve is
closed. Because of the use of packing rings, which have
alternate layers of graphite and stainless steel, the piston
valve is considered a “soft-seated valve”.
The contact between the piston and rings(sealing effect) is
positively assured by means of the pressure exerted by
stud bolts with depending on valve materials, Belleville
washera are fitted to compensate expansion due to
temperature variations.
A typical feature of the piston valves- compared with globe
valves-is that the piston is always held by at least one
sealing ring. Therefore, there is no vibration during closing
and opening operations.
Another primary feature of the piston valve is that the two
cylindrical seating surfaces, the bottom valve ring and the
piston come in contact when the fluid flow is already nearly
cut off. Another unique properly of the piston valve is that
with the valve completely open and the piston completely
supported in the inner diameter of the upper valve ring, it is
protected against erosive/corrosive elements as well as
prevented from having foreign matter deposited upon it.
Piston-valves –contrary to globe valves –are bi-directional.
That is, they can be installed in a process line in both
directions of flow. However, the most common installation is
with the fluid inlet pressure below the valve piston.
Since no metallic sealing surfaces are present, therefore is
perfect interchangeability of all components. A new set of
spares can be immediately fitted without the need of
adaptation to other existing parts. Therefore, inline
reparability and maintenance is easy, does not require
specialized, and will always make the valve like new.
First application, still widely used, was the tight shut-off of
low and medium pressure stem.
Piston valves have been selected to meet the server
demands of a large number of requirements in fluid
handling applications in the industrial sector. As such, they
are used in process lines containing many different fluids
such as steam, superheated water, thermal transfer fluids,
ammonia, LPG, hydrocarbons, acids, alkaloids, etc. their
ability to provide perfect seat shut off and packing tightness
and their along term troubles-free operation, ensured by
reinforced seal rings, have served to greatly expand the
number and types of applications.
Although the seat rings are suitable for use in temperatures
in excess of 1022°F (550°C), their use is limited to the
restrictions applicable to the body material, as well as that of
other metallic pressure retaining valve components. It
should be noted that carbon steel bodies can not be used in
temperatures above 800°F (427°C)
The piston valve which has achieved world-wide
recognition mainly due to tight sealing against high
temperature and pressure.

SUDESUDEParts of Piston Valve
The sealing system is astonishingly simple and
extraordinarily effective; always leak-tight across the
ports and to atmosphere.
The shut-off assembly comprises of a stainless steel piston,
two resilient valve rings and a ferrous-metal lantern bush.
The sealing surface consists of the cylindrical surface of the
piston and the corresponding inner surface area of the
sealing rings. This provides a very large sealing surface
compared with globe-one of the reasons for the piston
valves excellent seal.
The upper valve ring is of special material provides a reliable
seal to atmosphere. The middle layer of the ring is of special
(PTFE) and is fully contained between laminates, the valve
body and the piston, in both the open and shut positions.
The pressure on the valve ring is provided by the nuts
securing the bonnet to the valve body. Belleville washers are
fitted under the bonnet nuts to ensure that the pressure of
the bonnet on the valve ring kept constant. This maintains
uniform contact of the PTFE with the bush, to the lower valve
ring, which is contained in the body. The resilient sealing
rings are thereby compressed and transform this thrust into
a radial acting pressure. Being supported against the wall of
the valve body, the laminates of the valve rings are
compressed around the piston and thereby produce an
outstanding seal.
Piston valves are fitted with Belleville washers as standard-
in conjunction with the resilient sealing rings. This produces
a spring-action selling system. Owing to the different co-
Maintenance-free
Compensation for thermal expansions
efficient of thermal expansion of the various valves
components, fluctuations of pressure and temperature
create thermal expansions which inevitably lead to
leakage. The Belleville washers however maintain constant
pressure on the resilient valve rings and automatically
compensate for any thermal expansions that may occur.
The piston valves stay tight without maintenance.
Foreign matter in the medium cannot harm a piston valve.
When the valve is being shut and the piston enters the lower
ring, it automatically sweeps out any particles of sand,
welding globules or other impurities present in the medium.
The possibility of damage to the sealing system through
abrasive matter suspended in the medium-a well-known
problem with conventional globe valves-is-effectively
eliminated with piston valves. Fibrous and contaminated
media can be reliably shut off without trouble.
Piston and the body: permeability to gases is reduced to a
minimum and a optimum seal to atmosphere is guaranteed.
The lower valve ring provides the seal across the ports. The
lantern bush serves as a distance piece between the two
rings.
The thrust produced by tightening the bonnet nuts acts
axially from above, this thrust is transmitted from the upper
valve ring via the lantern.

Acceptable energy saving
Piston valve –user industries
The outstandingly good seal offers two advantages which
should not be over looked; there is no loss of medium (cost
factor); and toxic or aggressive media cannot endanger the
environment since they remain in the piping system. Piston
valves are leak tight-both across the ports and to
atmosphere.
