water market deregulation

Unless you’ve managed to completely avoid the news and trade press over the last 12 months, you’ll most likely have heard about the impending deregulation of the English Water Market.

From 1st April 2017, these changes mean that companies will be able to switch their supplier of water services (known as “retailers”) much like they do their energy supply.

Whilst the “wholesaler” of your water services will remain unchanged, according to your location, from next April you will be able to choose your retailer, who is responsible for e.g. meter readings and billings, and other customer facing services.

why start preparation now?

#1 understanding your current arrangements

Properly understanding your water arrangements is about getting to grips with the volume, your existing charges and identifying key requirements and trends. Now is the perfect time for companies to start carrying out audits of their water consumption and billing so that they’re in a position to choose the water contract that best suits their organisation’s specific needs when the time comes.

#2 collating data

To take advantage of the potential cost savings and improved customer service from a deregulated water market, businesses need to collate details of their sites, meters and volumes for a ‘hassle-free’ tendering process.

#3 updating records

Whilst collating data, ensure that missing information, underpayments or overpayments, are rectified and take time to pinpoint any potential issues, such as leaks, which could be pushing your usage up unnecessarily.Getting this done early will be a big help and could potentially reduce costs when it comes to tendering for retail services.

#4 conducting research

As we near deregulation date, new retailers will continue to join the market with varying value-added packages and discounts to offer.Understanding which provider will be the best option for your business will depend upon numerous factors, including your business size, industry, site portfolio and your key water services requirements. Get ahead of the game by keeping track of retailers that intend to operate within the competitive business market when it opens and do your homework on potential advisors that could work with you to put in place a water strategy for your organisation.
