• Reduce Traffic Impacts

• Create a long lasting Sustainable Pavement

Page 4: 404 presentation

Existing Conditions

• Current Condition is Poor to Very Poor

• Built in the Early 1960s with a Design Life of 20 Years

• 9-inch thick PCC panels that are 15ft in length by 12 ft in width

• 11ft Lanes

• Extensive Panel Cracking and Faulting of Traverse Joints

• Extensive Wheel Path Wear and Pavement Surface Polishing

• Uncomfortable for Users

• Verge of not being able to Serve Traffic

Page 5: 404 presentation

Overall Scope

• I-5 Northbound

• NE 45th St to NE 145th St

• Remove 9” PCC and Replace with 13” HMA and 9” base

• Two Phases

• 5.2 miles at 21.2 lane miles total

Page 6: 404 presentation

Scope: Phase one

• Phase one

• NE 45th to Northgate Way overpass-express lanes

• Approximately 10.5 lane miles

• 3-4 lanes

Page 7: 404 presentation

Scope: Phase two

• Phase two

• Northgate Way overpass to NE 145th St- no express lanes

• Approximately 10.7 lane miles

• 5-6 lanes

Construction Time

• Phase 1

• Begin on July 17th (After Independence Day)

• Continuous Closure

• Maximum Closure of 2 weeks

• Phase 2

• Begin on August 7th

• Continuous Closure

• Maximum Closure of 2 weeks (Finish before Labor Day)

Construction

• Maintain three lanes of traffic at all times

• Allow one lane for equipment and trucks to passing at all times

• Excavate and replace with crushed aggregate quickly

Page 11: 404 presentation

Sequencing: Phase one

• Crossover to express lanes

• Extend third lane: express lanes to main line

• Demolition & Excavation

• Grading & Paving

Page 12: 404 presentation

Sequencing: Phase two

• Remove crossover to express lanes

• Remove third lane: express lanes to main line

• Left three lane then right lanes

• Demolition & Excavation

• Grading & Paving

HMA Plant Location

• ICON Materials will be contracted to supply HMA and aggregate from their Auburn Aggregate Resource and Asphalt Plant located in Auburn WA

• Plant Produces 500 tons/hr when aggregate is wet and 600 tons/hr when the aggregate is dry

• Average trucking time from the plant to site is 40 minutes during normal conditions and 70 minutes during heavy traffic

Productivity

• Phase 1

• Using 87% confidence interval productivity will be 6.55 lane miles per 7 day closure

• Requires two 7 day closures

• HMA trucks are greatest limit to productivity

• Phase 2

• Using 87% confidence interval productivity will be 6.50 lane miles per 7 day closure

• Requires two 7 day closures

• HMA trucks are greatest limit to productivity

Critical Resources

• HMA Plant

• Plant is producing maximum capacity to provide for this project

• HMA Hauling Trucks

• High Spearman Correlation Coefficient

• Dependent upon plant production

• Travel (coffee stops, traffic, etc.)

Page 22: 404 presentation

Backup Plans

• The Seattle Asphalt Plant owned by ICON Materials will be on standby incase the main plant faults

• Located in the South Park neighborhood of South Seattle

• Produces 250 tons/hr when aggregate is wet and 300 tons/hr when aggregate is dry

• Average trucking time from this plant to the site is estimated to be 18 minutes in normal conditions and 30 minutes in heavy traffic

• Extra equipment such as pavers, buggies, rollers and dump trucks will be stored at the temporary storage facilities
