Environmental awareness
• Improve the citizens awareness of the amountof non-recyclable waste they produce;
• How to?– Inform citizens (global warming, biodiversity…);
– Build up the respect for the environment byteaching it at school;
• Finally…
SAVING MONEY THE LESS WASTE YOU PRODUCE THE LESS YOU PAY

How it works
1. Distribution of domestic bins for wastecollection;
2. Distribution of TAGs;
3. Instructions for the citizen.

How it works
For citizens
• Attach the tag to the bin;
• Fill the bin;
• Put the bin on the street onthe right day;
• Pay per use, proportionallyto the number of emptying.
For operators
• Take the RFID reader beforeleaving the depot: reader colourmatches the colour of waste binsto be collected;
• Empty bins as usual: noadditional operation required;
• Pay attention to the readerfeedbacks (warning on pendingpayments and wrong bins);
• Put the reader it in the cradle atthe depot: it will start anautomatic wireless datasynchronisation.

Why active RFID?
• Quick and dirty: because it works!
• It works fine: reading rate 100%!
• Minimum operators training:
– Take the device from the cradle and put it back;
– Execute only usual collecting operation;
• No changes to be made to the wastecollection vehicles.

Why active RFID?
• The device collects: bin_ID, timestamp,battery_level;
• Wow! I was going to forget concerns aboutbattery life?
• The battery life is of over 3 years – real datafrom the field.
• The RFID active tag is thin and light: a longerbattery life could be easily reached increasingits dimensions.

SIRV, some data
• The system has been running for over threeyears;
• Approximately 58 municipalities and 300kcitizens;
• We are planning the third generation of tag:
– New enclosure;
– Battery enhancement;
– Algorithm optimisation for power saving.
