XTRAORDINARY FURNITUREJOURNEY Furniture China exhibition’samazing adventure developed in

parallel with the Chinese furnitureindustry growth. China has witnessedan unprecedented period of growth inthe last two decades and today thecountry is the largest producer,exporter and consumer of furnitureworldwide.20 years ago China was out of the top10 ranking of furniture exporting coun-tries and about 50th as far as importsare concerned. Since the 1990s China has recordeddouble-digit growth in production everyyear. Within 10 years, from 2002 to2012, production value and exportsmultiplied by 9, with profit increasebeing even higher. The average annualproduction growth over the period2002-2012 was +25%. The Chinesefurniture industry has now become ahuge integrated industry with more than5 million employees, accounting formore than 40% of total world produc-tion (according to CSIL statistics).China ranks first also for exports. US$ 50 billion of furniture is soldabroad, whereas the value was in therange of US$ 5 billion just a decadeago.The impressive economic developmentof the country boosted the 1.3 billionpopulation’s disposable income, alsocausing a surge in domestic consump-tion. Since 2009, the country is thelargest furniture market in the world withUS$ 134 billion. It is also the countrywhere the largest increases (+8% inreal terms) in furniture demand areexpected. The domestic market, in fact,will be the driving force behind China’s

furniture growth, not only for domesticproduction but also for imported furni-ture. The furniture industry has becomethe fourth largest consumer goodsindustry in China.

UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE INDUS-TRY. PREMIERE IN 2015 The sofa segment played an importantrole during 2014 exhibition, as its role inthe Chinese furniture system is crucial.In SWEECC, the “100 Sofa Show”, aspecially themed show featuring sourc-ing for better fabric with 100 newdesigns of fabric sofas, was presentedin Hall 4. The ‘Sofa & Bed Show’ - abrand new upholstery exhibition - willdebut concurrently with Furniture China2015, occupying 40,000 sqm atSWEECC.Globally, China ranks first in the worldfor its upholstered furniture production,consumption and exports. Upholsteredfurniture accounts for about 17% of thetotal Chinese furniture production.Upholstered production increasedannually by 20% over the last five yearswhile exports increased by 22%, thusrepresenting the best performance at

international level. Upholstered furni-ture accounts for 14% of total furnitureconsumption. Local manufacturers sat-isfy the whole domestic consumption;indeed upholstered furniture importsaccount only for around 1% of the totalconsumption.

DESIGN IS THE FUTURE In the new Chinese furniture era, cre-ative design has become an indispensa-ble element of success. Two DesignHalls focused on design - Hall W4 forBrand Design and Hall W5 for OriginalDesign - gathering not only 106exhibitors bringing their innovative prod-ucts but also fresh design conceptscovering 16 international design brandsfrom Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore,India, Thailand, Australia, Belgium,Switzerland, Germany and the UnitedStates. Home Plus is the most noteworthy high-light in Hall E4, which is cooperatedwith Architectural Digest. On the otherhand, to encourage original designs,the organizer is partnering with ElleDecoration to launch the Gold IdeaFurniture Design Award of China, andinvited Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founderand CEO of the Red Dot Award, as thepresident of the jury. This year Designof Designers (DOD) hall hosted worksfrom 60 designers.

WHAT’S NEXT? The 21th edition of the show, FurnitureChina 2015 will be held from 9-12September, in the same exhibition ven-ues in Pudong, Shanghai — at ShanghaiNew International Expo entre (SNIEC),Shanghai World Expo Exhibition andconvention Centre (SWEECC).About 98% (that is 658 selected keyexhibitors) have confirmed their partici-pation in Furniture China 2015 andthere are nearly 400 new companiesrequesting some 40,000 sqm net forthe show in 2015.

The 20th edition of Furniture China and FMCExhibition took place from 10 to 14 September,jointly organized by UBM Sinoexpo and ChinaNational Furniture Association. Top Chinese fur-niture companies and 307 overseas exhibitorsfor a total of 2,685 exhibitors displayed their

latest products, design and technology at Shanghai New International ExpoCentre (SNIEC) and Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre(SWEECC). This year’s exhibition attracted 98,401 visitors, a +15.34% increa-se compared with last year, including 21,823 overseas from 158 countriesand regions, which raised +3.3%. 2,685 exhibitors attended the show.Among the national pavilions, the Korean one was exhibiting for the first timetogether with France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Malaysia, Indonesia andSingapore. To be noticed the presence of Brazil and Poland, also for the firsttime in Shanghai.
