Lighting Current Limiters

Supplementary circuit breakers, designed to limit available wattage

based on the actual lighting design criteria, thereby avoiding the

“watts-per-linear-foot penalty” imposed by energy codes while

maintaining track lighting density, performance and configuration

flexibility.

What is a Current Limiter

Lighting Current Limiters

• To limit the size of the electrical service

• NEC 220.43(B) requires 75W per linear foot for service calculations.

• By using current limiter you can use the track load as a typical lighting

load.

Why use Current limiters

Lighting Current Limiters

• Required by local Codes:

• California Title 24.

• City of Seattle Energy Code.

• City of Denver Energy Code.

Why use current Limiters (cont.)

04/13/23 4

• To help meet local codes:

• IEEC and ASHRAE 90.1 requires 30-watts per linear foot.

• California Title 24 requires 45-watts per linear foot.

• City of Seattle Energy Code requires 70-watts per linear foot.

Lighting Current Limiters

• Standard layout without current limiters

• 100’ of track and (32) 39W CHM (45W total fixture wattage).

• 32x45=1440W connect load.

• Using track length wattage calculations: 100x45 (based on T24)=4500W.

Lighting Current Limiters

• Revised layout using short track segments without current limiters

• 64’ of track and (32) 39W CHM (45W total fixture wattage).

• 32x45=1440W connect load.

• Using track length wattage calculations: 64x45 (based on T24)=2880W.

Lighting Current Limiters

• Original layout using current limiters

• 100’ of track and (32) 39W CHM (45W total fixture wattage).

• 32x45=1440W connect load.

• Using Current limiter wattage calculations: 4x480=1920W.

Lighting Current Limiters

• Individual current limiter cost $50-$60

• LC&D Sliver Bullet mini panel cost approximately $2000

• Use Individual current limiter on smaller spaces like Sunglass Hut.

• Use a current limiting panel on larger stores like F21, casual male.
