INDIA.
- Is a state in South Asia.
-Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal
on the southeast,
- it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; Bhutan, to the northeast; and Bangladesh and
Burma to the east.

A BIT OF HISTORY.
- The sea route to India was discovered in 1498 by a portuguese called Vasco de Gama.
- The Dutch and English established trading outposts on the subcontinent, with the first British trading post set up in 1612.
- The eighteenth century provided the British with a firm foothold in Indian politics.
- In 1835 English was made the medium of instruction in Indian schools
- As the British increasingly dominated the subcontinent, they grew increasingly abuse of local customs.
THE INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT. A COMPLICATED PROBLEM.
- Encompasses a wide spectrum of political organizations, philosophies, and movements which had the common aim of ending first, East India Company, then British colonial authority in parts of South Asia.
- The term incorporates various national and regional campaigns, agitations and efforts of both nonviolent and militant philosophy.
The Rebellion of 1857, The Indian rebellion of 1857 was a period of uprising in the northern and central India against East India Company rules.

MAHATMA GANDHI
- Since 1918, he figure at the head of the Indian nationalist movement.
- His philosophy was firmly founded in the non-violence.
- He organized protests by peasants, farmers, and urban laborers concerning excessive land-tax and discrimination.
- He made strong efforts to unite the Indian Hindus, Muslims and Christians and struggled for the emancipation of the “untouchables" in Hindu society.
- Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by Nathuram Godse.
