The Funny Bone Football Season is Back…

A man had 50 yard line tickets for

the SuperBowl. As he sat down, he

noticed that the seat next to him was

empty. He asked the man on the

other side of the empty seat whether

any one was sitting there.

“No,” the man replied, “The seat is

empty.”

“This is incredible,” said the first

man. “Who in their right mind would

have a seat like this for the

SuperBowl, the biggest sporting

event in the world, and not use it?”

The second man replied, “Well,

actually, the seat belongs to me. I

was supposed to come with my wife,

but she passed away. This will be the

first SuperBowl we haven’t been

together since we got married in

1967.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. That’s

Corn on the Cob Cupcakes

Vanilla Frosting colored with Yellow liquid food coloring

24 Vanilla Cupcakes, baked in white paper liners

3 1/2 cups small yellow, cream, or white jelly beans, such as Jelly Belly

4 pieces yellow fruit chews, such as Laffy Taffys or Starbursts

1 tablespoon black decorating sugar

1 tablespoon white decorating sugar

8 sets of corn holders (optional)

Working with 3 cupcakes at a time, frost cupcakes with yellow frosting. Arrange 5

rows of jelly beans, close together, on each cupcake. Place the 3 cupcakes side by

side on a corn dish or serving platter to resemble an ear of corn. Repeat process with

remaining cupcakes, frosting, and jelly beans.

Cut the fruit chews into eight 1-inch squares. Soften the edges slightly by hand so

that they look like melted butter. Place 1 square on top of each ear of corn. Sprinkle

with sugars. Insert a corn holder in the end of each ear of corn, if using. Serve.

Thanks for the Kind Words

Oatmeal’s Secret Medicinal Use If you suffer from eczema, you can find a great remedy in your kitchen pantry:

oatmeal. But instead of eating the oats, the trick is to add them to the bathtub.

"Oatmeal is one of the natural remedies that acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and

soothes the itching caused by eczema," says Badreshia-Bansal, of the University of

California, San Francisco. According to Reed, of the Denver Skin Clinic, add 2 to 4

cups of finely ground rolled oats to a bath and soak for 15 minutes. Then rinse your

body thoroughly, because any leftover oatmeal on the skin might irritate as it dries.

Moisturize after you leave the tub.

Bionic Cockroaches to the Rescue!

A new wave of first responders is being created at North Carolina State

University's iBionics Laboratory: biobot cockroaches. These biological

robots (hence the word "biobots") are live insects with high-tech

upgrades: electrodes are inserted into their antennae, and magnets are

glued to their backs to hold a pack containing a wireless control system

in place.

The packs carry a locator beacon and tiny microphone

to pick up, for example, cries for help in an emergency

situation. The cockroaches can be steered remotely

through electric pulses in the electrodes that stimulate

the antennae, making the insect think there's an obstacle in the way that

it has to maneuver around.

These cyborg cockroaches could be used as first responders in

situations too dangerous for humans to enter. Their biological,

autonomous survival instincts make them "really useful in uncertain,

dynamic environments," according to assistant professor of engineering

Alper Bozkurt, who led the project. He also hopes that this project will

help people appreciate these hardy little insects.

Cut Your Workouts in Half and Lose MORE Weight!

Pick up the pace for all-over fat burning.

Introducing short bouts of vigorous activity can speed up weight

loss and cut your workout time by up to half or more. Australian

researchers found that women who alternated just 8 seconds of

high-intensity exercise with 12 seconds of low-intensity activity

for 20 minutes, 3 times a week, slimmed down faster than

steady-paced exercisers who worked out twice as long. Those

who did intervals lost up to 16 pounds, shrunk their bellies by

September  Client  of  the  Month-  Diane  Robarts

Diane  Robarts  is  a  mother  of  three  grown  children,  a  grandmother  to  an  adorable  little  granddaughter,  a  Doctor  of  Oriental  Medicine  (DOM)  and  a  small  business  owner.

“I  moved  to  Florida  31  years  ago,”  Diane  said.    “I  grew  up  in  a  small  town  in  Indiana,  so  when  I  decided  to  open  a  business  I  chose  Venice,  because  it  reminded  me  of  the  small-‐town  feeling  I  had  in  Indiana.”

Diane  is  both  state  licensed  and  board  certified  and  has  been  practicing  acupuncture  and  Oriental  Medicine  in  Venice  since  2006  at  her  office  located  at  312  E.  Venice  Ave.

“A  lot  of  people  go  through  a  midlife  crisis,  I  went  through  a  midlife  career  change,”  Diane  said.  “I  went  back  to  school  for  a  5-‐year  program  condensed  into  a  3-‐year  program  with  over  3,000  hours,  including  academic  studies  and  clinical  work.”

As  a  Doctor  of  Oriental  Medicine,  Diane  covers  the  areas  of  Chinese  herbal  therapy,  nutrition  therapy,  Chinese  massage  therapy  and,  of  course,  acupuncture.

“It’s  a  very  rewarding  career,”  said  Diane.  “I’m  a  people  person.    All  of  my  patients  are  wonderful.    To  see  the  results  of  their  overall  health  improving  is  fantastic.”

When  not  at  her  practice,  Diane  plays  trivia  every  Thursday  night  at  the  British  Open  Pub.    She  likes  to  rollerblade  and  gets  together  monthly  with  the  girls  for  a  girls  night  out.    She’s  an  avid  reader  of  all  types  of  genres  and  is  an  avid  football  fan.

“I  don’t  fit  the  typical  female  profile,”  Diane  said.  “I  hate  shopping  and  I  love  sports.  I  follow  the  Bucks,  but  I  grew  up  being  a  cheesehead.  My  friends  won’t  call  me  on  Sunday  because  they  know  I’m  watching  football.”

When  Diane  first  moved  to  Venice  in  2006,  she  asked  around  for  a  good  mechanic.

“Of  the  first  four  people  I  asked,  three  told  me  to  come  to  1  Stop  Car  and  Truck  Repair.”    Diane  has  learned  through  personal  experience  that  the  staff  at  1  Stop  has  integrity.        “Integrity  is  a  number  one  priority  to  me,”  said  Diane.    “I  also  appreciate  that  they  go  above  and  beyond.  Most  service  places  don’t  do  this.”      Diane  recalls  an  example  where  she  had  her  brakes  replaced  at  1  Stop  and  got  an  unexpected  surprise.      “After  the  work  had  already  been  done,  Rich  later  called  and  told  me,  ‘The  brakes  we  installed  have  a  new  rebate.  I’ve  already  filled  out  the  card  and  sent  it  in  for  you.    You  should  be  receiving  the  rebate  money  in  the  mail  soon.’”    “I’ve  always  had  top-‐notch  service  at  1  Stop  Car  and  Truck  Repair,”  Diane  said.    “They’re  always  friendly  and  professional.    I  make  it  a  point  to  refer  people  I  know  to  1  Stop.  I  will  go  to  no  one  else.”
