Bajaj Avenger – A Stylish Cruiser Bike
Bajaj Auto, one of the leading and well-recognized names in the field of automobiles in India
and elsewhere, was earlier known for the reliable scooters they made. However, as the scooters
fell out of favour, the Bajaj group forayed into the business of bike manufacture and has now
created a space itself in the area of motorbike manufacturing as well. In India, Bajaj bikes are
preferred by many for their affordability, fuel-efficiency, good performance and low
maintenance cost. Even though the majority of the bikes produced by Bajaj belong to the
commuter segment, they have made their presence known in other segments as well. The cruiser
segment in India is rich with the presence of Bajaj Avenger, a popular cruiser bike from the
makers.
The Bajaj Avenger Bike, a cruiser style motorbike is one of the most stylish bikes from Bajaj
Auto. Even though its design and style is hugely inspired by its predecessor, the Bajaj
Eliminator, the Avenger has an identity and road presence of its own. The Avenger was
originally launched as a 180 cc bike with a single cylinder, air-cooled Kawasaki engine. However,
the huge success of Avenger prompted Bajaj to introduce many more variants of the bike. As a
result, the bike is now available with various powers like 200 cc and 220 cc as well.
Bajaj Auto realized the need to make their mark in the premium bike segment. For this purpose,
they swapped the single-cylindered Kawasaki engine with a more powerful, indigenously
developed 178.6 cc DTS-i engine. This engine powers many super performer of Bajaj, including
the sports bikes like Bajaj Pulsar. Nonetheless, on the Avenger, the engine underwent some fine-
tuning to ensure that the higher torque demanded by a cruiser bike is generated. Accordingly,
the Bajaj Avenger debuted in June 2005. It has the distinction of being the first indigenously
built cruiser motorbike by an Indian manufacturer.
In 2007, the bike underwent some changes, which included an upgrade of its engine capacity to
200 cc. The oil-cooled engine, which was a customized version of the engine that powered the
Pulsar 200, made the Avenger more powerful than its earlier edition. The new edition of
Avenger offered a top speed of 114 kmph and it took only 5.18 seconds to get to 60 kmph from
zero.
The Avenger underwent changes again in 2010. However, there were only cosmetic changes this
time, with the engine left untouched. The fuel indicators and headlight were revamped and the
bike was offered in new shades.
Priced at INR 77605/-, the Avenger offers a mileage of 50 kmpl. Even though its low ground
clearance could sometimes create a problem on urban roads, the Avenger is very comfortable for
long rides, especially on highways.
