The End of the Car Show (As We Know It)?Each New Year’s celebration accompanieswide-eyed hope that the coming twelve monthswill offer something new and promising. In thecouple weeks that follow, two industry shows dothe same thing for professionals who follow theelectronics and automotive markets. CES inLas Vegas and NAIAS in Detroit are thoseshows where thousands of journalists andhundreds of thousands of consumers visit tosee what will be on their wish lists.

As has been the pattern for the last few years,CES stole much of NAIAS’ automotive thunderwith automakers pandering to the digital crowdwhere venture capitalists and speculators haveboosted the shares of many businesses toutingvaporware to near blue chip levels. If only theFiat Chrysler’s and Volkswagen’s of the worldcould get some of that unbridled optimismbehind their stock prices.

With their focus directed toward Las Vegas, theautomotive industry seems to have taken itseye off the “hometown” ball. NAIAS, more thana quarter century after becoming an“international” auto show, is sadly lacking fornew products. Major brands such as Jaguar

Land Rover decided to not show any product atNAIAS while Fiat Chrysler’s introduction washeld a week earlier at CES with no pressintroduction at all during NAIAS’ media launch,this was especially depressing since, for years,Chrysler was known for their spectacularNAIAS launches (which included literallysmashing through the glass at Cobo Hall with anew Grand Cherokee and leading an actualcattle drive through Detroit).

The overwhelming theme at this year’s showwas “ho-hum.”

Volkswagen took the deafening silence as inviteto step up is mea culpa world tour andintroduce the ID Buzz concept, which isexpected to lead to a production electricvehicle. Nissan brought out a true concept(Nissan Vmotion 2.0) as a hint toward its futurestyling direction for the whole brand. And Kia, ofall brands, made the most noise with its near-luxury, rear-drive Stinger performance hatch onits march upscale.

For an industry celebrating another recordsales year, you couldn’t tell from NAIASdisplays.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV

Hyundai and Volvo offered legitimate luxury

cars, but it was the affordable electric from

General Motors that couldn’t be beat. With its

200+ mile range, the Bolt EV gives the public

the promise of next year’s Tesla Model 3 but

makes it available this year. Priced, after

incentives, below $30,000, the Bolt EV has

very few competitors and it will make other

automakers step up their game.

A new category this year, “utility” of the year

removes crossovers and minivans from the car

and truck groups as they have become their own

subgroups. The fourth generation of minivans

hybrid version as well as upping the quality of

the people carrier.

North American Truck of the Year

2017 Honda Ridgeline

Repeating its award from its introduction 11

years ago, the new Ridgeline has two more

NATOTY trophies than either the Titan or

SuperDuty. While the runners-up take the

traditional approach to pickups, the Ridgeline

combines unibody structure with novelties

such as an in-bed speaker and storage along

with car-like ride and fuel economy making it

a true standout in this field.

2018 BMW 5-Series•Turning 35 years old this year, the 5-Series is one of BMW’s most important model lines

•Now in its 7th generation, the 5-Series loses over 100 lbs by increasing the use of aluminum, high-strength steel, and magnesium

•Styling is, as is BMW tradition, evolutionary while technology, as should be expected, is cutting edge with Gesture Control and the latest version of BMW’s iDrive user interface

•Powertrains include BMW’s 248hp 2.0L turbo four, 335hp 3.0L inline six,

and 456hp 4.4L twin-turbo V8 as well as the plug-in hybrid model which

allows for 14 electric-only miles and 0-60 times in the low 6-second range

2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe•Based on the newest E-Class sedan, the coupe adds even more style to the mid-sized model

•Like earlier versions, the E-Class Coupe removes the frames from the windows for a hardtop silhouette and easier conversion to the convertible version to be added later

•Nearly five inches longer than the previous version

•First edition announced to be the E400 with a 392hp twin-turbo 3.0L V6

mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission

2017 Faraday Future FF91 Concept•In order to prove its existence, Faraday Future had a running “beta” prototype available to the media at this year’s CES

•As would be expected by a vehicle of this type, the FF91 sports an automated self-parking system (including the ability to find a parking space), 10 cameras, 13 radar sensors, and a retractable lidar system necessary for autonomous driving

•Fully electric, the FF91 has three motors and all-wheel drive to harness

the claimed 1,050hp available

2017 Chrysler Portal Concept•Since “millennials” will hate the popular and award-winning Chrysler Pacifica minivan, FCA specifically targeted these youth buyers with the Portal concept

•With six seats spread across three rows, the Portal is the people carrier of the future

•Fully electric, the Portal was designed to be autonomous and allow passengers full use of all of their devices, once the steering wheel and pedals retract into the instrument panel

•FCA claims the batteries can be charged for a 150-mile range in just 20

minutes while the 100kw-h lithium ion battery pack can propel the front-

drive concept over 250 miles on a full charge

2018 Chevrolet Traverse•The second generation Traverse revises the styling and makes more interior space for passengers

•While not adding any significant length (about 0.6 inches), the Traverse adds about two inches to the wheelbase and about four cubic feet of cargo room

•New lighting adds LEDs to the front and rear along with new RS and High Country trim levels

•Updated 3.6L DOHC V6 gains 10% more hp and is mated to the new

nine-speed automatic; a new 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder is offered in

the RS trim

2018 GMC Terrain•Smaller dimensions (five inches shorter in length) of the second-generation Terrain makes room for the smaller Acadia

•The compact Terrain keeps its five-seat/two-row interior design with all positions (except for the driver) offering fold-flat capability

•New interior sports 7- or 8-inch infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems, OnStar 4G LTE wifi

•Three turbocharged four-cylinder engines are offered including the 1.5L,

more powerful 2.0L, and upcoming turbodiesel, all mated to a nine-speed

automatic in either front-drive or all-wheel drive formats

2017 GAC EnSpirit Concept•As China’s Guangzhou Automotive Group prepares for their debut in the US, GAC moved onto the main floor of the NAIAS for the first time

•The EnSpirit concept showcases GAC’s crossover intentions in a sporty, modern package

•Inside, the Enspirit features tasteful wood trim throughout as well as two large skateboards mounted in the cargo hold floor

•Hybrid power is provided by an Atkinson-cycle 1.5L four-cylinder gas

engine mated to an electric motor with plug-in ability and a claimed

electric-only range of up to 50 miles

2017 GAC GE3 Concept•Coming soon in production form to China, the fully-electric GE3 showcases GAC’s intentions

•One electric motor generates 120kw (about 160hp); with its 47 kw-h lithium ion battery pack, the GE3 is expected to travel up to 190 miles on a single charge and shoot to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 9.3 seconds

•In China, the production version is expected to sell for less than US$18,000 after all incentives

2018 GAC GS7•Topping GAC’s range of crossovers, the GS7 will go on sale in China shortly

•Riding on a 107-inch wheelbase and stretching to 186 inches in length, the GS7 would fit into the American two-row crossover market fairly easily

•Unlike many of the other new introductions, the new GAC’s short wheelbase-long body design won’t take advantage of the new emissions laws, but quick turnover in Chinese designs will remedy that in a generation•Power comes from a 198hp 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with

start/stop mated to a 6-speed automatic transaxle powering all four wheels

2018 Honda Odyssey•With fewer players in the field, the minivan market has become very competitive, which is why this is the fifth generation Honda minivan in the nameplate’s relatively short life

•New interior features a new digital instrument cluster, new infotainment system, a full array of cameras, and Honda’s new PA system which allows the driver to talk to passengers even when they are listening to movies through headphones

•Honda’s 3.5L SOHC V6 gains 32hp and is mated to a choice of ZF nine-

speed or Honda dual-clutch 10-speed automatic transaxles, which should

increase fuel economy over the old 6-speed version

Hyundai-Kia

2018 Kia Stinger•Perhaps the most noteworthy introduction of the NAIAS, the Kia Stinger signifies Kia’s intention to move upmarket

•Expected to enter production before the end of the year

•Based on Hyundai’s new rear-wheel drive platform (to be shared with the upcoming Genesis G70), the Stinger is a four-door hatchback riding on a 114.4-inch wheelbase and intended to target the likes of BMW’s 4-Series Gran Coupe

•Available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the Stinger will be offered

with a choice of a turbocharged 255hp 2.0L four-cylinder or a twin-turbo

365hp 3.3L V6 with an 8-speed automatic transmission

2017 Infiniti QX50 Concept•Designed to replace the rear-drive based QX50, the concept showcases the new front-drive platform

•Six inches shorter than the outgoing model, the new QX50 removes three inches from the wheelbase as the wheels get pushed to the corners

•Among the new features, the QX50 sports Nissan’s ProPilotsystem which allows for limited self-driving capabilty

•Offered on a number of Infiniti models, the turbocharged 268hp 2.0L four-

cylinder is shared with Mercedes-Benz

2017 Nissan Vmotion 2.0 Concept•Just as the brand completes its move to the “Vmotion” styling, Nissan updated the theme and will begin the shift toward the second generation of the look

•Taking the “V” front end styling as a starting point, the “V” lines run down the sides and the “floating roof” pinched c-pillar window is enhanced and slides down along the roofline toward the rear of the car

•Interior trim adopts the transition toward eventual autonomous driving

with a smaller steering wheel and fewer driver controls

•As with many new products, Nissan is moving toward the longer

wheelbase/shorter body design, opening up the cabin and extending the

footprint

2017 Nissan Rogue Sport•Nissan’s top-selling model in the US is the Rogue, bouncing on and off the monthly top ten list

•Designed to improve those numbers further, the foot-shorter Rogue Sport allows Nissan to better compete in the subcompact crossover market

•Sold elsewhere as the Qashqai, this model is among Nissan’s best-selling nameplates in the world

•Like the larger Rogue, the Rogue Sport is powered by a 141hp 2.0L four-

cylinder engine with a CVT powering either the front or all four wheels

2018 Lexus LS•Nearly three decades after Toyota introduced the Lexus brand (and LS model) at the Detroit show, they used the show to debut the fifth generation of the top-of-the-line sedan

•The new platform and powertrain drops about 200 pounds while retaining all of its length

•Styling takes a more athletic approach than earlier versions of the LS with

its long and low look running from the “spindle” grille to the ornate taillight

design

•Standard power comes from the new twin-turbocharged V6 producing

415hp; with its 10-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy is

expected to rise over the previous 4.6L V8 and acceleration times are

expected to drop to 4.5 seconds

2018 Toyota Camry•Toyota’s top selling model and the best-selling car in the US gets its biggest upgrade in years

•Moving to the new platform, the company expects its Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) to underpin almost all front-drive models over the next few years

•While the design was described as everything from attractive to boring, the new look is definitely an evolution of the traditional Camry look

•TNGA adds two inches to the wheelbase while the length grows just over

an inch

•New 2.5L four-cylinder engine combines all of the latest technology in

both hybrid (with a CVT) and non-hybrid (joined to an 8-speed automatic

transaxle) editions; 3.5L V6 is still available

2017 Toyota Concept-i•The happy little concept shows the direction Toyota is looking for the future

•Anticipating the autonomous future, the Concept-i revises the user experience (UX) so that the car’s virtual assistant “Yui” can “learn from and grow with the driver”

•The driver is greeted with a headlight wink and a “Hello!” message as they approach the vehicle

•Yui’s artificial intelligence can tell if the driver is getting drowsy, warning

the system to take over as needed

2018 Audi Q8•Priced above but based upon the Audi Q7, the production version of the Audi Q8 shows a sportier side of Audi crossovers

•While riding on the same wheelbase and measuring about the same length, the Q8 features a more coupe-like body style with room for only two rows of seats; the concept actually only sports room for four passengers

•This plug-in hybrid “e-tron” model joins Audi’s 3.0L TFSI V6 and an

electric motor with a 17.9 kWh lithium-ion battery for 438hp alongside all-

wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds

2017 Volkswagen ID Buzz•All-electric Volkswagen Bus-inspired people carrier is part of the brand’s move to make buyers forget about diesels

•The “ID” lineup will eventually encompass no fewer than three dedicated electric models

•Based on Volkswagen’s new MEB modular electric vehicle platform, the ID Buzz should inspire a production model priced below US$50,000 sometime after the turn of the decade

•The goal for this single-motor rear-wheel drive (or possible dual motor, all-

wheel drive) minivan is for 373 miles (on the European test) on a single

charge

•Dynamic interior allows for nearly infinite reconfigurability of seats

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan•Production version will roll out of the Puebla, Mexico plant starting in April 2017

•Eleven inches longer and featuring almost 60% more cargo space than the first-generation, the new Tiguan offers an available third row of seats

•Front- and all-wheel drive versions will be offered as Volkswagen attempts to recover from the diesel-inspired sales crash of the last two years

•A 184hp version of the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder will be mated to

an eight-speed automatic transaxle
