Our idea of transportation is changing, and so is the way we work.

Smart mobility
Trend 1:Connected vehicles are becoming standard.
80%of new vehicles will be connected by 2020
- Pierre Audoin Consultants
What are connected vehicles?
Connected vehicles communicate with other
vehicles (V2V), with the cloud, and with the
transportation infrastructure (V2I) to help drivers
make data-driven decisions.
By 2020, all new vehicles hitting the market in
the U.S. will be connected vehicles (study by
Pierre Audoin Consultants & BearingPoint).
Connected vehicles are becoming the standard.
The emergence of connected vehicles is due to the
price reduction of data communication tools and the
emergence of IoT devices. Cars are now the main
driver behind IoT, which is the fastest growing segment
of technology (GHB Intellect).
Infotainment units are bridging the gap between connected cars and mobile devices.
“The car is the ultimate mobile
device.” -Jeff Williams , Apple
COO
Infotainment units are bridging the gap between connected cars and mobile devices.
The popularity of infotainment units means that we’ll begin to see apps
developed specifically for drivers, rather than mobile devices, making them safer
and more user-friendly.
It also means fleet solutions will start being able to leverage infotainment units to
implement company-wide technology from the cloud, rather than manually
installing hardware in each vehicle.
• More comprehensive data on vehicles to better hone technology
• Improved safety• Contextual awareness • Machine learning,
paving the way for autonomous vehicles of the future
What does this mean for fleets and field workforces?
What does this mean for fleets and field workforces?
Connected cars will be able to send 25 gigs of data to the cloud every hour about
routes, speed, road conditions, climate, wear and tear, maintenance and more
(Quartz Media).
Fleets can use that data for deep learning and analysis to improve margins (e.g.
by predicting maintenance needs) and better manage fleets.
What does this mean for fleets and field workforces?
Mobile workforce providers will extend offerings to infotainment, so you can expect
routing, dispatch, etc. to be provided to the driver via the infotainment unit.
There will also be overall better driver safety capabilities, thanks to driver-friendly
apps coded specifically for cars, accessed through the infotainment unit and
activated by voice. Again, this means easy setup without hardware installation,
saving time for fleet IT teams and meaning less time vehicles are sitting in the shop.
Infotainment Is Not Ideal for Fleets Yet, But Will Be Soon
Infotainment Is Not Ideal for Fleets Yet, But Will Be Soon
Current BYOD (bring your own device) policies leave room for stolen data, if
employees lose their devices. It is also difficult to stop employees from turning
them off or changing the password.
Infotainment units shift IT teams from managing the physical vehicles and
hardware themselves to centralized, cloud-based management.
Once connected vehicles are adopted by fleets, infotainment units will hold the
power.
Trend 2: Vehicle ownership is becoming
less necessary (and less desirable) thanks to
mobility-as-a-service.
Shared mobility has become a multi-billion $ industryR

(Just announced shared car service)
How does this apply to fleets? These models are extending their services to serve both consumers and companies.
For example, nearly 25% of ZipCar users are business members (2014
Zipcar study).
Shared mobility for mobile workforces
• Field Service Delivery• Engineering• Consulting• Sales• Deliveries (Google Shopping Express)
• Transit between campuses• Contingency pool• Employee usage of corporate cars
Shared mobility works for workforces that need a simple method of transit and only spend part of their work day on the road, like:
This is just the beginning...why stop at sharing cars?
Perhaps in the future, two companies who are not in competition could even
share employees who are serving the same customers in same area. This is just
one idea — the possibilities are endless.
Benefits of carsharing
Reduced number of fleet vehicles at companies
Corporate car sharing has been found to decrease the need for at least 33,000 privately owned vehicles in North America. – Zipcar case study
It has reduced the number of fleet vehicles in U.S. companies by at least 35% (Enterprise).
Benefits of carsharing
Lowered cost of milage reimbursement
The cost companies must pay their employees for reimbursed miles can drop by 25% from $.50 per mile to $.36 per mile (Enterprise).
Benefits of carsharing
Better for the environment
CO2 emissions dropped as much as 65% per vehicle and 89% of assessed emission when employees used carsharing services (Enterprise).
Trend 3: “Grey fleets” are growing in popularity, but can pose silent risks to companies.
What is a grey fleet?
Traditional boundaries of fleets are starting to blur, making way for new
options for mobile workforces.
Grey fleets are fleets that utilize carsharing with their employees’ vehicles,
meaning the vehicles used by the fleet are not owned by the employer.
Instead, the vehicles are privately owned by employees, who the company
reimburses for mileage.
What is a grey fleet?
Grey fleets are already in use by many companies in Europe.
● In Europe, there are 14 million grey fleet vehicles, making up 40% of work
vehicles in total (European Transport Safety Council).
● 62% of businesses allow private car usage for work-related activities, not
including commutes (Lex Autolease).
● In the UK, the public sector alone has 1.5 billion miles annually driven by
grey fleet vehicles, making up more than half of total public sector miles
driven (Fleet Alliance).
Risks of grey fleets• Liability if accident occurs• Lack of management visibility, as you can’t install
fleet-tracking hardware in vehicle• Duty of care falls on company• Mileage costs add up, especially when workers
inflate claims to make more money• Can be bad for environment as employee
vehicles may be older
Safety in grey fleets
Safety in grey fleets
● Every week, there are 200 road incidents involving someone on the clock that
cause injury or death in the UK (RAC Foundation).
● Road accidents are the number one cause of work-related accidental death in
the UK (Health and Safety Executive).
● Up to one-third of all traffic accidents involve someone driving for work
(Occupational Road Safety Alliance).
Accidents cause a severe financial strain on businesses who must pay for
damages and reparations for any injuries and deaths. Businesses also pay in
terms of lost time and productivity, for both injured employees and employees
who spend their time going through insurance and other post-accident
paperwork.
Fleet management is no longer just about managing vehicles
Safety goes far beyond liability and savings. Driver safety also impacts growth
margins and customer demand of your product or service.
Employers must recognize existence of these up-and-coming fleet trends, and
begin to manage against the risks associated with these trends, such as grey
fleets.
While there aren’t many tools on the market for this right now, you can expect to
see more in the near future.
Buckle up: Smart mobility is coming!
Connected vehicles, carsharing, infotainment unites...these new technologies are
bringing more options for how we work than in the past.
Eventually, our workplace cultures will have to shift to fit these new ways of
working, but a large cultural shift is never easy — so start asking yourself some of
the following questions now to prepare yourself for the future.
Buckle up: Smart mobility is coming!
● How are my employees going to be getting around in the future of my
company?
● Where are there opportunities for improvement in my company in terms of
driver safety, our effects on the environment, our overall efficiency and
productivity, etc.?
● What technology exists that could help us leverage those opportunities?
● What can I start doing today that will make those opportunities a reality for my
company in the future?
