Stories on the website are very short and usually just appealing for witnesses or are very vague pieces of information regarding the headlines. The headline is what attracts people but when there isn't much to read on the story then people will lose interest. When something like this happens in york the people of york want to hear about it because it concerns them as residents.

I also think that even thought it is a local newspaper it would benefit from having national and global stories within the website, it is a newspaper known for the city of York but York is a small place and not a lot happens that will grab peoples attention. The stories included are important to York residents but aren't going to interest them at all. Take things that are happening in Syria and France at the moment, people want to know about it and this is what draws people to more national news papers such as the Daily Mail.

Comedic stories add interest to a website as it gives people something funny to read when they are just scrolling through your website they will usually include photo galleries for people to look through. Although this is completely different to the content you currently have on the website it again just adds more appeal and will be something people will share around their friends and family for them to then read and pass on to their friends and family bringing more people to your website which could lead them onto reading more stories on the website. I think the tool bar at the top of the page looks very desperate and that you need to have these things just to get people to the page. The ‘Dating’ and ‘Book an ad’ tabs seem like a desperate attempt to get people on your page. Also something else wrong with your advertising space is that I think your websites space is 80% advertising and 20% stories. This makes the page look unattractive and cluttered. Having some advertising space sold is reasonable but I think at the moment too much advertising space is being sold.
