Dear Jakarta,

Your glamorous is so tempting. As moths are looking for

bright lights and fly toward the light, many people come

to you from out of town every year.

Over 114,000 new comers in a year, what a number.

As a capital city you give them a light of dream. You give

them a Cinderella story although you never promised to

those people that they will achieve their dream.

Dear Jakarta,

Your glitter of city life has made so many complexity

problems. Traffic, social welfare, environment are the

most. You are no longer friendly and natural. He’s strong

who survive, law of the jungle applies. The survival is not

always succeeds people, some of them just survive to eat,

not for their life.

But it does not lessen the allure of, even though your

blink blink life is just like a circus performance of cheerful

decoration.

Dear Jakarta,

You need a wise and clean leader. You need a

city government that is capable of changing

the city become more neatly. We are fed up

with the promise of political appointments. We

often heard the sweet words from gubernatorial

candidates with no significant result. 3 years is

not a promise that we need, nor the person who

claims expert. We just need an honest person

with a good background as well, who could

see and feel the problems that exist, with no

tendency to self-interest or group.

We still hope a better of you, a better Jakarta

Jakarta Overpopulated

Day after day Jakarta increasingly more congested. Maybe

like a disease, it is very chronic Jakarta which already has

symptoms ranging from congestion, poor sanitation,

garbage, until the problem are more acute, it is a newcomer

could not be stopped to make Jakarta more crowded.

Immigrants continued to arrive from outside Jakarta in the

absence of supervision between the incoming and outgoing

Jakarta. According to Central Bureau of Statistics from Table

Results of Population Census 2010 DKI JAKARTA population

numbered 9,607,787 inhabitants. And the number is twice

the population of Singapore! WOW!.

This phenomenon is a demographic phenomenon and that

is natural. But if this phenomenon left unchecked it will

constantly fatal to Jakarta. I believe with good management

of government, this will not happen or at least can be muted.

And I really hope, a new leader Jakarta this time can solve

this problem.

Hopefully ...

KRL* has been a favorite means of mass

transportation that connects Jakarta

and its surrounding areas. However, the

service quality of the KRL is far from

adequate. The gentleman in the photo

is definitely one of the victims of such

inadequacy. We hope that the next

governor of Jakarta will take this matter

more seriously and come up with a

solution that will satisfy every KRL user.

The person who drew the grafitti probably

sense that Jakarta now is rather similar with

Jakarta in the old days. I don’t know why he/

she made such conclusion, but I got a feeling

he/she felt that Jakarta has not improved

significantly from his/her perspective. That’s

why he/she has the urgency to put his/her

critique into the form of art.

We all love clean Jakarta, especially

Jakarta without any riots. However, it is

close to impossible to make it come true.

As a capital city of Indoensia, Jakarta will

never be clean and free from riots.Wishing

for such conditions is futile, at least for

now. But, there is always hope for a better

Jakarta as portrayed in the grafitti.

Those who fail? Slackers? Or a poor Govenance?

Dear Jakarta,

Jakarta, a city which is a region with the densest population in Indonesia,

Jakarta as a metropolitan city, Jakarta which for most people to be a

place to pursue a dream, rushing throng residents of outlying areas

come to town to earn a fortune.

Many people who come pose serious problems. For those who are not

fortunate in this city had become vagrants and beggars.

To date, the number of vagrants and beggars in Jakarta, is still an issue

that never gets done. This is a proof of the failure of local governments

in developing, as well as raise the economic welfare of a fair and

equitable.

Vagrants and beggars should be nurtured and given the skills, so as to

be independent, local governments tend to be far only raid and arrest

of street children and beggars, without providing solutions such as

making training to make the products in order to become productive

human beings are able to prosper.

Budget to support the training and skills that already exist. But, never

actually used controlled. Currently, the number of street children and

beggars are scattered in Jakarta reached about 8,000 inhabitants.

highest in East and West Jakarta.

A letter to Jakarta

Hi Jakarta, how are you today? I hope you are always good,

as you should be the Capital of Indonesia. Even if your area

only 661,52km2 in the west of the island of java, but many of

Indonesian people depend a lot of their life to you.

I remember our meeting 10 years ago, I was only really knew about

you. With just a Bachelor Certificate and young spirit, I tried my

fortune. I spent days with joy and sorrow, I complain sometimes

when your roads are filled with flood or when your road is filled

with plenty of vehicles that for traffic jams, then your air is polluted

by the suffocating pollution. But sometimes I feel grateful when the

convenience of getting an electrical power source or when I simply

get some gasoline for my ride, where many areas in Indonesia is

very difficult to get it.

Dear Jakarta, why the hell you are like this? There is someone

who takes care of you, right? Once every 5 years we use our

right to choose the one who can take care of you. With a little

hope and faith, we collect our votes to elect people who will be

responsible of everything about you.

Is it possible he was not really care about you or he does not

understand how to take care of you? But maybe he also is trying

to take care of you slowly. So you do not give up to us, although

sometimes we say something bad about you, you are still the

best for us, for our family.

We always love you, happy birthday Jakarta.

Waste, says it already familiar to the

people of Jakarta. Because the waste

is one of the problems that come to

enliventhe complexity of life in Jakarta.

Imagine Everyday, 6500 tons of waste

dispose citizens of Jakarta. This waste

volume increase and average of 5

percent annually. It seems trivial, but

from this waste problems in Jakarta is

started.

The river is one practical place for people in Jakarta

to take out the waste. Solittering becomes clogged

drain age is a daily sight, especially in areas along the

banks of the River. The mindset of the people who

cause the short termit is a common place. All of the

silting of the river in Jakarta cause by waste.

Page 26: Streetbanditos Prohect #1 Dear Jakarta

Flooding is not a disaster any more for

the people of Jakarta, they have become

accustom to flood seach year. High rain fall,

accumulation of waste, siltation of rivers,

poor drainage, and lack of soil in filtration,

the cause of flooding in Jakarta, which has

long been identified.Until now the flood has

not been handled well, although its cause has

been known for a long time.

Faces of Jakarta

Dear Jakarta,

For some people Jakarta was a big city that has thousands of hopes, chances, and dreams.

Every year, thousands of people come from small city in Indonesia to Jakarta, they seek

for a better future here. But, behind its beauty, Jakarta has many untold story, unspoken

reality, dark side of the biggest city in Indonesia.

The most dynamic city in Indonesia, the city that never sleep, Jakarta activities never killed

by time. Hour by hour might been gone, but Jakarta never show it weakness as a biggest

city in Indonesia. Traffic, business, the dynamics of Jakarta people, blend together into one

big wheel that rotating from day to night, from night to day. Jakarta is a city that offer many

opportunities, a city for people hanging their life, a city that can make their dreams and

wishes come true.

Jakarta is a tough city, a city that never sink by it sparks of existences, a city that never

deserted from people which always hope about their future. Traffic and poverty was the

biggest issue on this city, millions of cars, busses, and motorcycles filled the Jakarta roads

everyday, thousands of poor peoples are stay at slums area, bridges, roads, and spreads

around almost at all part of Jakarta. Flood and garbage also taking a part of disaster that

Jakarta have to face. The indiscipline people and lack of educations about how to keep

the environment clean is the biggest factor of those problems that Jakarta have to live

everyday, every hour, every minute, every second.

Jakarta from my perspective is a city with many uniques characters, a city with it own

troubles, a city that never changed into a stop rotating city. Jakarta is beautiful if we throw

our ego, if we stand together with the same vision, same mission, to changed the Jakarta

into a better city. This is my Jakarta, this is the reality of Jakarta, this is the face of Jakarta.

My big city,

My city that never sleep. Jakarta…Steps of Jakartans

The two sides of life are separated by a pillar.

It’s sufficient to describe the condition of the

city, a social gap. Photo above shows a young

man playing his gadget, while the state next

to an old beggar who was counting his beg.

This is a very common sight in the city because

of high levels of social inequality and welfare

differences are very striking.
