Page 1: Sam smith analysis

• Generally a black and white theme

• Doesn’t look at the camera in the album cover,

poster and the video.

• His eyes remain closed in the album front cover

and the video of the acoustic version of his song

• Dressed casually/formally to suit his genre of soul

as this genre is interpreted with a lot of emotion.

Therefore, as he’s dressed simply, he is consistent

with his genre.

• Plain background in the album cover, poster and

video which makes him stand out to the

audience. This also enhances the genre of Sam

Smith’s music as its soul.

• The black and white may link to his emotions

which explains his facial expressions on the album

cover, in the video and the poster.

• Stylish, modern haircut all throughout to appeal

to a certain audience of young adults.

• The font is consistent, bold and quite plain

• His name seems to be his logo and it allows the

audience to identify his music.

Sam Smiths CD cover, advert and video show clearly

what his consistencies are.

• The text used

• His hair

• His style

• The colour scheme

• His eyes remain closed in all shots of him

• All these consistencies foreshadow the type of

music he sings

Page 2: Sam smith analysis

• Has his head down which shows his vulnerability. He is

entangled within his own music.

• Casual but neat clothing which tells us he cares about his

appearance.

• The text used on this CD cover is consistent in comparison to

the media forms(advert&video) – its simple which allows the

audience to focus more on the image of him on the CD. This

enables the audience to focus on his emotion of the image

used of him on the album cover.

• The dull and dark background colour used in this conveys

there is a mystery to his music which isn’t unleashed on the

cover.

• In this Sam Smith video (Nirvana), the image used on his

media forms of him remains consistent as he has his head

down.

• Once again, a dark background is used allowing the

audience to focus on Sam Smith and his voice which is how

he is identified as we can interpret it is what he chooses to

show off most about himself.

• Here he wears smart clothing which isn’t too different from

the album cover and advert. This illustrates he is well

presented and chooses a simpler but smart way to dress.

• On his advert the text remains consistent in comparison

to his album cover which conveys he has his own

personal image as he keeps it the same. The way in

which his name is written on the advert is how it would

be written on most media forms which present him. This

then automatically makes it a text that only him as an

artist would use to present his name which then we as

an audience would identify him.
