Inspirations for my music video
Citation preview
So a lot of things influenced my version of the music video of the indie song ‘The Power of Love’ and I decided to share them with you so you can see what I got inspired by.
There’s a lot of variety in where my inspirations came from, films, social networking, books, fashion and existing music videos.
Over the next few slides I will show you my inspirations and talk you through them.
One of my favourite films is James
Cameron’s award winning Titanic – it
never fails to make me cry and I
personally think it is a brilliantly shot film
and has a great storyline, especially the
fact it is based on a real life event.
What I really love about this film is the
circular narrative and how the entire
plot is Rose’s flashback. This is where I
got inspired to end my video where it
began, in my grandma’s house. I guess
as well, Titanic also sub consciously was
the film that got me thinking about
flashbacks. The idea of the couple re
uniting at the end was actually my own
idea, but I guess I was more convinced
to do this after watching this end scene.
Another favourite film series – Harry Potter.
I’ve always been fascinated by the effects
they put in the films and have been to the
Harry Potter Studios in Leavesden many
times, admiring the countless sets, props,
costumes, etc, especially how they do the
spells in post production, in particular
‘Obliviate’ the spell that causes the
memory to vanish. Hermione (Emma
Watson) uses this in a significantly heart
breaking scene at the start of the seventh
film, and her photos start to disappear
from the family photos. This is where I got
my inspiration from, to do the same with
the photo of Adam and Beth, though it’s
going to be quite difficult to do this. The
disappearance of Adam is meant to be
ambiguous and have different
explanations to different people, but Harry
Potter fans can connect with this scene as
it may remind them of the ‘Oblivate’ scene
and then may think older Beth has lost her
memory of Adam which is then
remembered at the end of the music
video.
I have been following
Kristina Webb
(colour_me_creative)
for a while now on the
popular picture based
social networking app,
Instagram. She’s only
19 and draws a
brilliant variety of
drawings and I
discovered her when I
was looking for other
artists on Instagram, to
check out their work.
About a year ago, she
drew these two
images.I really like these two images because they represent some of the issues we still face in
modern society, and art is a way of showing this to people, and so I decided that I would
try and include these issues in my music video. Homophobia is still a massive problem, and
people get bullied for it, so I tried to combine the two, including a same sex couple in my
video, and hence the reason for the negative words scribbled on Marcus’s back.
As an Ed Sheeran fan, I have
watched most of his music
videos, and this one in particular
was to me, very effective in
selling his lyrics.
I love the story plot, about a
female Cupid hiding her true
self away (just like homosexual
often feel they have to hide
away) and then revealing
herself, and tearing at her back
in agony to reveal a bloody
feather. I used this part of the
video to inspire the scene
shown below, where Marcus is
tearing at his back in agony, to
reveal the negative scratched
words on his back, which after
meeting William, will change to
positive words, showing what
‘The Power of Love’ can do.
Despite having not read the book or seen the film I can’t escape the attention surrounding ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ based on John Green’s best seller, and now I am finally reading the book. I saw many of their promotional material online and whilst out and about and in particular this one on the right caught my eye as for many editions of the book, this image is now its front cover. I like how it is such a simple picture, and how the actors have been placed in a ying/yang position.Though I already had in mind to do a similar position for Adam and Beth, seeing this convinced me it was an effective pose.
Though whilst not a major Twilight fan myself, I
appreciate all the work that went into the sequel of
films, and I especially liked the scene where young
Bella is dreaming about her getting older, whilst her
fiancée Edward, a vampire, remains 17 forever. This
scene also features Bella and her grandmother, and
whilst I had already planned to use my grandma after
seeing previous students’ work, I realise how effective
editing can be – the quick changes between young
and old Bella. Originally I was planning just to reunite
Adam and my grandma, but after re watching
‘Eclipse’ I decided that I would use a similar editing
style and re unite young Beth with Adam.
This is a screenshot of the YouTube video ‘Say Something’ by the duo Great Big World. I had heard and watched this song being performed at several events through YouTube including The American Music Awards 2013 and then watched the original video, which is actually incredibly simple yet very effective – it can reduce you to tears
through the lyrics and characters!
This is the video
which inspired me
to make a scene
with only a piano
and a spotlight, as I
think this makes it
look professional
and effective and
keeps the main
focus on my main
actress.
