The European Union is the second largest consumer market with of fishery products in the world, surpassed only by China. In addition, the European Union imports nearly 70% of the fish it consumes. The selecta gastronomic variety of the area has a strong European aquaculture component and a taste for healthy food has increased considerably the consumption of fish, which opens up an opportunity for the export of shrimp, fish fillets (trout and tilapia), canned foods, and processed products of sea.
The trading block in the European Union shares characteristics with regard to consumption, but there are also differences that make markets more attractive than others. Consumers are unique for their purchases and are looking for high quality products that meet international standards.
MAJOR SUPPLIERS TO THE EUROPEAN UNION In 2011, imports from the
European Union of the aquaculture industry and fisheries1 reached a value of US$37,433 million, an increase of 15% in comparison with the value recorded in the previous year. China was the main supplier for the European Union exported in 2011 US$5,845 million; Colombia was ranked 45 as supplier for the European Union. The main imported products in 2011 were fish fillets, salmon fresh or chilled, and shrimps, prawns and shrimps.
COLOMBIAN EXPORTS TO THE EUROPEAN UNION
Exports of the aquaculture sector and Colombian fishing toward the European Union in 2013 totaled US$17 million and account for 13% of the total exported to the world of this category

characterised by the actions of research, innovation, technological development and technical training, which enables high productivity and competitiveness.
The offer is available throughout the year, emphasizing mainly species of tilapia and rainbow trout.
TARIFFS BEFORE AND AFTER THE TRADE AGREEMENTRENDS
The European consumer is characterised by being very conservative, demanding and knowledgeable of the quality of the fishery products, as well as the guarantee of their safety for human health (e.g. , metal levels).
The taste for nutritious foods make in the general European gastronomy, the fish and seafood are particularly important, especially when they are accompanied by wine or other add-ons that highlight the flavor of seafood.
One of the current trends in the purchase of fish fillets and canned fish is the search for healthy products. The products of the fisheries sector are attractive due to its high protein value and the benefits that brings its regular consumption.
European consumers prefer products that are certified and that are harmless to the environment, this is a relevant factor at the time of purchase.
ACCESS REGULATIONSSANITARY AND PHYTOSANITARY REQUIREMENTS
for the export of products of the aquaculture industry and fishing toward the countries of the European Union, you must meet the following requirements of the regulations of the European Commission: to be
originating in an establishment approved by the European Commission in Colombia[ 2]. Meet the other requirements that apply to the export, control and import of products of
animal origin. Comply with the general requirements for the importation of food included in the general
food law of the EU. Regulations on hygiene in food products through each and every one of the phases of the
production chain, and the general implementation of the procedures that are based on the HACCP principles.
Conditions related to maximum levels of residues of veterinary drugs, hormones, steroids and contaminants in foodstuffs of animal origin.
Requirements on ceilings of nitrogen. Sustainability is a very important issue for European consumers.

Aquaculture and fishery products in the European Union must comply with the labelling rules laid down to ensure that consumers have all the essential information to the time of purchase. The labelling of these foods must comply with the general rules laid down by Directive 2000/13/EC and some specific labelling rules.
