Sub genres:

• Sub genres A sub genre is a smaller category that performs a specific work that forms a specific class of a larger genre.

• EG: -extraterrestrial• -monster• -slasher• -supernatural • -psychological

Horror hybrids

• Horror hybrids:• Horror hybrids A hybrid is something of a

mixed origin or composition. When two film genres are combined together in order to create a mix of both genres.

• Eg. Combination of slasher and supernatural.

Slasher films

• Slasher films Typically involve a psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims in an extremely violent manner with a particular weapon. Many weapons used, lots of gore. Many low/high angle shots to depict fear and close ups to focus on emotion and reactions.

Supernatural films:

• Supernatural films Depict unusual events that occur that appear beyond normal perceptions. This includes villains that have unbelievable abilities that are not normal. Lots of special effects to portray the abilities of the villain. Lighting is not natural and very expressive.

(2014) These two films are of the same subgenre (supernatural). They both involve a villain, who are both women- these women are supernatural as they possess curses to people and are ‘spirits’. In both films the spirit is shown through an object. In the ring the spirit is accessed and curses people through watching a video. In oculus the spirit curses people through a smashed mirror as the spirit is trapped in the mirror.

Was the sub genre re-invigorated?:This sub genre is one of the most popular in horror films so therefore it is always being used as a popular sub genre and there are many films released a year with this particular sub genre. As these films follow a similar idea, the directors and producers just need to think of different ways to present the typical narrative style.
