JAZZ MUSIC IN THE 1950’S
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• America at end of WWII and start of Korean War
• First 10 and 12 inch records came out
• Up-rise of television/ Program features
STYLES OF JAZZ IN THE 50’S
• Cool Jazz
• Hard Bop
• Modal Jazz
• Bossa Nova
• Featured artists were ones like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and many more
COOL JAZZ
• 1949-1955, height of growth
• More soft, reserved, and controlled than the tension of bebop
• Sizes ranged from trios all the way to nonents (9)
• Included more classical instruments such as tuba, flute, french horn, and vibes
• Music written and arranged ahead of time (unlike bebop)

FACTS• Recorded over three sessions in NYC starting in 1949
• Released 1957, Arrangers Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan
• (9) Nonet - alto and bari sax, french horn, tuba, trombone, trumpet, rhythm section (3 piece)
