CASTLEMORRES AND THE FAMILY OF

MORRES / DE MONTMORENCY

The Morres family has played a prominent part in Irish affairs over many generations. They descend from a Redmond Morres of Knockagh, co. Tipperary, who died in 1624. His son was created a baronet in 1631, and in the 18th century several of his descendants served with distinction in the Irish Brigade of the French Army (the 8th Baronet was killed when scaffolding fell on him at the coronation of Louis XVI).

Hervey Morris, a younger brother of the 3rd Bart, was a captain of horse in the regiment commanded by Cromwell during his Irish campaign. He settled in Co. Kilkenny and was MP for Knocktopher. His grandson another Hervey represented the Irishtown of Kilkenny in Parliament and was Mayor of Kilkenny in 1752-53; he was created Viscount Morres of Castlemorres in 1763.

The first Viscount was succeeded in turn by his two sons by different marriages, and the 3rd Viscount, Francis Hervey Morres, also inherited the Morres baronetcy when the senior line died out. In 1815, together with several other family members, he changed his surname to de Montmorency in (to quote Burke’s Peerage) “the genuine but mistaken belief that his family descended from the distinguished medieval French family of that name”.

The Viscountcy became extinct on the death of the 5th Viscount in 1951, though the baronetcy continued until the death of Sir Arnold Geoffrey de Montmorency, 19th Bart, in 2003. Through marriage with a daughter of John Kearney, Bishop of Ossory, the family is distantly related to President Barack Obama.

The once-magnificent Castlemorres House, built in 1751 by Francis Bindon, was sold to the Land Commission in 1926 – a few years later it was unroofed and a demolition sale took place. The remains were finally demolished in 1978, and the demesne now forms part of a woodland area of some 2000 acres.

Kilkenny” O.O.C., 127cms x 102cms (50” x 40”) in original giltwood frame. (1) *Hervey Redmond Morres, 2nd Viscount Mountmorres of Castle Morres, Co. Kilkenny (c. 1742-1797) was the eldest son and heir of Hervey Morres (MP for Irishtown, Co. Kilkenny, created Viscount Mountmorres in 1763) by his first wife Letitia, née Ponsonby. Inheriting a strong tradition of political involvement on both sides of the family (his uncle John Ponsonby was Speaker of the Irish House of Commons), he played an active part in the activities of the Irish House of Lords. He enthusiastically supported the cause of reform, especially of relief for Catholics, and in 1785 appeared in the House in the uniform of a Volunteer officer. In the portrait he is shown clutching a bill in his right hand, doubtless one of the many that he sought to progress through parliament and perhaps the bill for the cultivation and preservation of trees and shrubs which he piloted in 1791. Thereafter he retired from politics and moved to London, where he suffered increasingly from depression and eventually took his own life. A prolific writer, he was described as “eccentric, rebellious, a wrong-headed Irish patriot, almost an outsider”. He never married, leaving his estates to his sisters while his title passed to his half-brother. Provenance: de Montmorency,; Burnchurch House; Castle Morres Co. Kilkenny. €2000 - 3000

621 President Barack Obama's direct ancestor After William Cuming - Late 18th / Early 19th Century Irish School "Half-length Portrait of Rev. John Kearney, Provost of T.C.D., & Bishop of Ossory," O.O.C., 76cms x 64cms (30" x 25"), in original gilt frame. Inscribed on old label on reverse. (1) John Kearney was born in Dublin in 1741 of relatively humble origins (his father was a barber surgeon), entered TCD at the age of fifteen, and though without the advantage of family connections or patronage became a Doctor of Divinity in 1777, Professor of Oratory in 1781, and Provost in 1799. He was a founder of the Royal Irish Academy in 1785. A shrewd and practical administrator, he played an important role in guiding the College safely through the turbulent 1790s and the Act of Union. An urbane and popular member of Dublin Society, he is chiefly remembered as the man who recognised and encouraged the talent of Thomas Moore, who was then an undergraduate. In 1806 he was appointed Bishop of Ossory, and surprised his colleagues by actually residing in his diocese. He died in 1813 and is buried in St Canice's Cathedral, where the epitaph on his tomb reads "the duties of the episcopate he piously discharged, and in the study of things divine and human he trained his mind with diligence and refinement". His daughter Frances married the Rev. John Fane Vernon (see lot 620). Another daughter Rose, married Hervey Pratt, who inherited Castle Morres in 1831 on the death of his mother, a sister of the 2nd Viscount Mountmorres, and changed his name to de Montmorency. Bishop John Kearney was a first cousin of Joseph Kearney, the U.S. President Barack Obama's direct ancestor. The Bishop’s father Michael made such a fortune selling wigs in Georgian Dublin that he was able to set Joseph’s father up with a new house in Shinrone, County Offaly. * See Turtle Bunbury’s book “The Landed Gentry & Aristocracy of

Co. Kildare,” also turtlebunbury.com; eneclann.ie; and Gabriel Burray’s two part documentary called “Obama’s Irish Roots.”

Geoffrey Fitz-Hervey de Montmorency (1876-1955) was the younger son of the Venerable Waller de Montmorency of Castle Morres, Co. Kilkenny. He was educated at Malvern College and Pembroke College, Cambridge.

In 1921-22 he was Chief Secretary to the Prince of Wales (subsequently King Edward VIII) on his tour of India. The tour was intended as a public relations exercise for the British Raj and came at a difficult time in Anglo-Indian affairs - the Amritsar massacre was still a bitter memory and the tour was boycotted by the Congress Party, but the pageantry and the Prince’s easy manner attracted huge crowds.

In 1928 de Montmorency was appointed Governor of the Punjab (the proclamation is signed by Sir Samuel Hoare, Foreign Secretary and co-author of the notorious Hoare-Laval Pact which allowed Mussolini to take over Abyssinia). He remained Governor, with one short interval, until 1933

5. His large and extensive personal scraps Album, “Reminiscences of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales’ Visit 1922 - G.F. de Montmorency” thick oblong folio, containing original photograph, invitations, printed plans for travel, & other events, banquets, menu’s, seating plans, printed silk and other broadsides, race cards, church, theatre and concert programmes, postcards, etc., some rare items, period covered, Nov. 12th 1921 - March 15th, 1922.
