U (Universal)• Films which are rated U by the BBFC are suitable for an

audience which is above the age of 4. These films may contain very infrequent very mild language such as ‘hell’. Nudity may be shown however it must not have a link to sexual themes. Sex itself is only to be shown in a very mild way such as kissing or references to such behaviour. In terms of comparison to film noir it is extremely unlikely that any films of that particular genre will fall into this category as there is minimal threat or substance abuse.

PG (Parental guidance)• Films which have been rated PG are suitable for the general

viewing of an audience who is above the age of 8. Topics such as discrimination may be touched on and bad language in the nature of ‘Shit’ or ‘son of a bitch’ may be allowed as long as it isn't used frequently in an aggressive manor. Sexual references are unlikely to be used however if a child is unlikely to understand or is used in comedy it may be allowed. Violence or threat would be mild yet if the film is set in a fantasy setting, a more powerful focus on violence would be seen as appropriate. This particular point would prevent many noir films from being given this certificate as this particular genre/style does quintessentially contain a considerable amount of violence, either firearms or physical.

12/12a

• The 12a certificate is given to films in which are not deemed suitable for under 12 however some may be if the said child is with a adult. The 12 certificate is used for home use such as DVDs. Language such as F*ck can be used depending on the manor used and its frequency. Sexual references can be used with comedy like a PG however sex can be briefly portrayed in a reasonably raw state for example brief nudity. Violence can be expected however scenes dwelling on the subject will not be featured. Drug abuse cannot be used unless heavily discouraged.

15

• Films which have been given a 15 certificate must not endorse discrimination however it may be featured along side language which is discriminatory. Drug taking may be seen however the film as a whole must not promote the taking of dangerous substances, especially those which are relatively easy access. Strong language can be used however the frequency is also important. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual manor ad during sexual scenes nudity is permitted without detail. This is a likely certificate for a noir film as it allows the work to virtually fill its potential in terms of violence and sexual themes.

18 and R18

• Films which have been given the 18 certificate have the most explicit content which is deemed suitable to a mature public audience. These films may include extreme violence, very strong language and a considerable amount of threat or horror. Additionally abusive substances can be featured however they must be presented in a negative way. R18 films are only allowed to be shown in selected cinemas and sex shops. These films are often created to arouse or stimulate sexual feelings. However sexually abusive activity must be discouraged and must not be presented in a way which makes is seem pleasurable for the victim. Furthermore content which breaches criminal law is not permitted within such films.
