DIFFERENT TYPES AND STYLES OF MUSIC

VIDEOS

There are three different types of music videos :

1.Narrative Based2.Performance Based 3.Concept Based

Narrative Based videoA narrative based video is a video that shows us a story

line behind the song, The video itself has a meaning behind it in a narrative based video. The song narrates the video and the audience gets to know what exactly is the meaning of the video with the song playing in the background. These kind of videos sometimes features Actors or the singer itself to portray the story. An example is :"Song for someone" by U2 starring Woody Harrelson directed by Vincent Haycock. Narrative based videos are often found when they feature footage from a film.

Performance Based videoA Performance based video is a video where we see that a singer or a band is performing in the video, In these kinds of videos the artists are dancing, lip syncing and shows a fun side of themselves by entertaining the audience. This is a good example to promote a star image . These videos are also cheap. During the video we can see different shots of the performance and the live audience that is featured inside the video.

An example is :"Closer to the Edge" by the band 30 seconds to Mars. This music video shows us different clips of their tours, them performing for their live audience and interacting with them, it also shows a lot and different shots of the artist as well as some clips from behind the scenes.

Concept Based VideoConcept based music videos usually have no story line, and sometimes have little or no relation to the meaning of the lyrics being sung or the artist singing them. This kind of video usually are based around a certain concept.

An example for this is: " Black or White" by Michael JacksonThis music video is also an example of both Narrative and Performance based.

AnimationAn Animation video is digital and a series of pictures and clips mostly taken out from films

An example for this type is from Lion King’s “Circle of Life” by Sir Elton John

InterpretiveInterpretive music videos are where the lyrics for the song tells you exactly what is going on in the music video

An example is from Rihanna's ft. Eminem “ Just the way you lie”

ImpressionistA impressionist video is where they take inspiration from lots of different sources in the media, or just an idea that they have on something.An example is from Red Hot Chili Peppers “Dani California”

SurrealistThese types of videos are very dreamy and artistic. Also they are very much similar to Impressionist videos.

An example is “Like a Prayer” by Madonna

Inter-texualityInter-texuality is the way in which one media text is referred in another

An example is from Lady Gaga’s “ Paparazzi”

AllusionAn allusion is simply a reference to something

An example is “The Kill” by 30 seconds to Mars
