CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF ALUMNI RELATIONS DISTINGUISHED ALUM FOR THE DAY DERRICK DOUGLASS Clark Altlanta University, 2009 Derrick Douglass (CAU’09) is an award winning graphic designer, fine artist and businessman. He has created successful graphics for clients including Canon, American Institutes for Reasearch (AIR), Help Them Hear, LDG Con-sulting, National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and many other brands. Almnus Douglass is pleased to announce a new art series “Sakini Mwali.” Swa-hili for “Strong Quiet Lady,” The series is inspired by women he saw meditat-ing: they appeared serene, yet strong. African-American and ethnic figures play a major role in the series because there is a dearth of these images. He says, “If artists like me, don’t create art that places black figures on display for everyone to see, then who will.” Alumnus Douglass surprisingly loves constraints. He says, “having limited op-tions forces me to be inventive, which creates unique, emotional art.” His pen and ink technique uses patterns upon patterns to create intricate forms. The design process is organic since patterns are created from ink stamps and diy tools, or inspired from those found in nature, books, and online. Most artworks require over 100 hours of hand inking. Alumnus Douglass has a BS from Arcadia University, MBA from Clark Atlanta University and Graphic Design Certificate from Montgomery College. He also serves on the City of Rockville’s Cultural Arts Commission. Please visit www.selaethnicart.com to view Alumnus Douglass’s art collection “Sakini Mwali”
