Artificial Intelligence In Video Games

Jonathan Schaeffer - Design Engineer “The more we learn about intelligence, we realise that there isn’t any magic”.

Considered useless when compared to AI in robotics.

The field of computer science, attempting to mimic human actions.

Computer Evolution

Until recently, humans thought that thinking, was something only for a living thing.

The computer has no DNA.It has No moving parts, Just electrons swirling around. It is smaller that our mind, but can crush us at a chess game.

rational agents that can make intelligent decisions, not being impacted with emotions or feelings.

Makes the smartest decision it can, based on the information it’s given.

Why it is used in games

Creates a sense of realism and empowerment for the user.

Constantly thinking about the best way to operate and react. (predicts the users movements)

Often taken for granted

Learns from each movement the users makes, giving the computer more power.

Deterministic

AI Cheats in game- Programs tell “bad guys” in games where you are on the map. Or bad guys can see through polygon walls.

AI researchers and AI Games Developers argue whether rules are actually intelligence.

Helps villains (in game) to find/chase your character. (Given Roam-Code)

Behaviour tree’s make up the skeleton of the game.

Philosophical thoughts - What is Intelligence?
