Central Image

The central image of this double page spread in the magazine ‘Hammer’ portrays the main artist of the magazine.. In this case, Avenged Sevenfold. The central image is of the lead

guitarist, Synyster Gates. He is portrayed in a superior way, crouched on a bass drum infront of a large building high up; connoting the impression he is in some way in charge.

The use of dark, monotone like colours reflects the genre of the magazine, as rock and metal are considered as dark rebellious. The central image is placed on the left hand side of

the magazine, equalizing the text to picture ratio.

Masthead of the article

The masthead of the double page spread takes up a quarter of the overall page space. ‘2009 was the year that everything changed for AVENGED SEVENFOLD’. Here, the writer of the article has used this masthead to intrigue the audience into reading more. The masthead is an un-answered statement, so therefore it creates the effect that the audience want to know how everything changed for their featured idolized artist.

House style and fontsThe text within the article is boxed, allowing a clear structure for the target audience. The opening of the article features a drop cap, catching the readers eye. Also within the article is a pull quote; made into its own sub-heading. The pull quote reflects an obstruction within the history of the band; intriguing the reader to learn more about the consequences of ‘Jimmy passing away’. Bold italic fonts are used, the name of the band’s font showing their identity. The engraved and faded capital approach connotes a dark mysterious sense within the article, implying to the reader that the content is not going to be upbeat and positive.

Audience and representationThis magazine ‘Hammer’ appeals to its target audience as it reflects the heavy rock and metal

genre the specific readers are interested in. As the magazine is released on a monthly basis, costing £3.99, the wide variety and amount of content reflects the value of cost. When looking at the features of the double page spread, the central image of the artist represents the target audience as the artists featured within are idealistic for the target audience; what they aspire to be like.

Mode of addressThe mode of address within this double page spread is formal; of a medium register, however includes some aspects of informality. The well known artist on the left hand page appeals to the target audience as it is of a globally known guitarist , who is idolized by heavy metal fans. The main audience of this magazine ranges from late teens to early thirtys, so the language within appeals to them as it is not too complicated.
