Focus on FORM

Paul Cezanne

• Used planes of color• Small brush strokes• Wanted to simplify forms into geometric

shapes and planes• Observation, observation, observation…

Cezanne believed human perception to be very complex, and studied objects intensely…his still lifes often took longer than a year to complete

Assignment 1: Simple Still Life

• Choose an object, and draw it as a FORM:– Use shading and highlighting to show where the

light is hitting the object as well as which parts of the object are not being hit by the light

– Include a shadow cast by your object. Pay attention to the shape and color of the shadow (shadows are not always a perfect reflection of the object, and they are not always black!)

– Remember not to put it smack in the middle of the paper!

Form’s a 3D compound: Shape + Shading/Shadow

Assignment 2: Still Life with Attitude

• The object must still look 3D…it must have shading and a cast shadow to show where the light is hitting the object
