Das Inti Raymi (Quechua für „Fest der Sonne“, inti „Sonne“, raymi „Fest“) war eine religiöse Zeremonie der Inkas zu Ehren der Sonne (inti). Es fand zur Zeit der Wintersonnenwende der südlichen Erdhalbkugel, also gewöhnlich am 21. Juni in der Inkahauptstadt Cusco auf der Waqaypata („Platz der Tränen“) statt und war gleichzeitig das Neujahrsfest im Andenraum. Seit 1944 finden jährlich am 24. Juni auf den Inkamauern von Sacsayhuaman bei Cusco Theaterdarstellungen des Inkafestes statt, zu denen tausende Touristen und Besucher aus der Umgebung kommen.

During the Inca Empire, the Inti Raymi was the most important of four ceremonies celebrated in Cusco, as related by Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. The celebration took place in the Haukaypata or the main plaza in the city.The Inti Raymi (“Festival of the Sun”) was a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti, one of the most venerated gods in Inca religion. It really was the celebration of the Winter Solstice - the shortest day of the year in terms of the time between sunrise and sunset. In South America, which falls below the equator, the months of June & July are Winter months.
