What is cloud computing?

A distributed pool of computing resources (hardware and software) that can be quickly provisioned and used on-demand…typically within the context of a "pay for what you consume" and "pay as you go" cost model.Small sampling of top cloud

computing vendors/platforms

Virtualization & Cloud for Small BusinessCLOUD COMPUTING

These are cloud computing platforms that are

available to any and all who can pay for the

service. These platforms are – rightly or wrongly –often perceived as “not

secure.” Example providers include Amazon, Microsoft

and Salesforce.com.

Public Cloud

Virtually every organization (large and small) implements a combination of BOTH public AND private cloud products/services.

Hybrid Cloud

Typically, a private cloud is defined by an organization that invests in its own hardware and software within a datacenter (or, ideally, multiple data centers) that is NOT publicly accessible but that nevertheless provides its users with applications/services critical to the organization’s operations.

Private Cloud

Virtualization & Cloud for Small BusinessCONVERGENCE

While virtualization and cloud computing have been intertwined for quite some time it is only in the last 10 years that technical solution vendors have figured out how to mix the two technologies in ways never before imagined! Vendors/platforms in this space include Simplivity, Nutanix, Pure Storage, Axcient, Hadoop, etc.

(DR)/Backup• Redundancy/High Availability/uptime• Workforce mobility• Scalability• Performance• CapEx vs. OpEx

Cons:• Cost• Technical Expertise• CapEx vs. OpEx

Why should I care about these technologies?

Virtualization & Cloud for Small BusinessTHE FUTURE

Won’t my investment in these technologies be ‘obsolete’ in 2 years like my last iPhone???

Yes…• …some technologies are like a new car…they DO

lose value as soon as you drive them off the lot…and NO…• …because these technologies are almost entirely

digital (read: hardware independent) and so this ‘car’ can be tuned, upgraded, repainted, etc., all while still being ‘driven!’

Virtualization & Cloud for Small BusinessQUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Why did the universe have such low entropy in the past, resulting in the distinction between past and future and the second law of thermodynamics?

“To solve any problem, here are three questions to ask yourself:First, what could I do?Second, what could I read? And third, who could I ask?”
