Pre-employment Commercial Driver Application

The process of hiring a driver can be complex and time consuming, but these measures must be met under the DOT guidelines under 391.51 (General requirments for driver qualification).

It is important that Under §391 of the FMCSR, any driver who operates a vehicle with a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more must have a Driver Qualification File with all the necessary information.

The First steps.........

In the hiring process of a driver is that they have completed in full, all the necessary information relative to their application as listed here;

Been informed and completed the Driver rights and Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) in regards to the investigative information pertaining to their application.

Driver Application process should include...

A current copy of their valid CDL,

Which includes a list of reasons for gaps in employment e.g. unemployed, medical etc.

10 years of employment history

Commercial Drivers License verification

Current DOT Physical Exam

Current Medical Examiners certificate, and copy of long for phyisical form. (to be placed in confidential file)

Pre-Employment Drug Screen

Each company must have the driver complete a pre-employment drug test, with returned results before the employee can perform a safety-sensitive function, such as driving a commercial motor vehicle.

Processing the Application

Once you have received the complete application, it is time to process the application according to information both necessary for the FMCSR (Federal Motor Carrier Regulations) and DOL (Dept. of Labor)

Make sure that you have the correct contact number, person, and/or fax number as well as a physical mailing address.

If potential employee was self employed, they must provide tax documents, invoices or anything relative to their business that would be able to verify them for the period of time they were self employed.

If after several attempts for request for information has been sent, a suggestion of a physical letter stating that you have tried several time to contact someone within their business to verify previous employment and have been unsuccessful, ask them to please provide this information, also enclose a copy of the FMCSA regulations §391.23 Investigation and inquiries and if a response has not been made following this then a complaint may be made under §386.12 Complaint.
