PeerIndex - social login user experience design

DESCRIPTION

Some PeerIndex users get confused by our two social logins. How can we design a better user experience for them? I gave this talk at UX Cafe (http://www.meetup.com/uxcafe/) at Google Campus, January 31st 2013, and got some ideas from the panel and audience.

Two social logins, one user

Hi! I'm from PeerIndex

Our product has two social logins, Twitter and Facebook.

This confuses people!

New user registration

Leslie registers with Twitter and enjoys PeerIndex

We create an account for them

@leslie

But...

Leslie returns tomorrow and signs in with Facebook

We don't know this is @leslie, so we create a new account

Leslie.L

!!!

Now Leslie's confused. Why doesn't PeerIndex show their Twitter details?

Leslie doesn't know we've made two accounts(it shouldn't be Leslie's problem!)

!!!

What can we do?

And we're confused!

What's the best way to link the two social logins?

What are the easy wins?

How could we make linking the two accounts a better experience?

"This Twitter account has already been linked to another user"

Is there a better way?

Can we do better than just improving our messaging?

Can we solve this problem at a deeper level?

What's the best way to manage having two logins?

Is there one best way to rulethem all?

Or are there just better(or different) compromises?
