When drawing outside, be sure to pay attention to the actual shapes of what you are drawing.

Branches on trees point in different directions and are different lengths. Be careful not to draw a generic tree shape.

Notice that in this drawing you can see the branches of the tree between the leaves.

Consider different marks you can use to represent different textures of bark, grass, rock, and leaves.

This drawing is loose and gestural, but provides a lot of information about textures, proportions and lights and darks.

These simple marks do a great job suggesting the shapes and forms of specific leaves and trees.

This drawing utilizes contour and texture as we have been practicing in class.

These are quick sketches used to practice layout and composition. Notice how each mark shows light and dark and suggests the textures and forms in the scenes.

Notice the dark, grey, and light areas of this drawing. Try to draw your landscape by picking out areas of differing darkness.

This drawing also shows dark and light shapes made by trees. The textures help to define the different areas.

Your assignment for today is to make at least one completed landscape drawing.Your drawing can use pencil OR charcoal.

The landscape drawing should be well composed. Consider shapes of light and dark, texture, form and proportion. Each drawing should be well observed. Do not generalize shapes of trees, rocks, or other forms. Be specific!

The following landscapes are from CR students.

These student drawings are what NOT to do. You will see no trees that look like this– perfectly spaced branches with no textural differences. Your landscape drawing should reflect an entire class period of work and demonstrate good observational skills.
