ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF

OZONE

OZONE

It

damages

the

vegetation

OZONE

It shortens the

life of rubbers

and textile.

OZONE

It is an irritant gas to

humans, producing eye,

nose and throat

symptoms, as well as

alteration to normal lung

function.

OZONE

High concentrations

of ozone are

correlated with

decreased life

expectancy in

animals.

OZONE AND THE

SST

OZONE AND THE SST

SST consumes

enormous quantities of

fuel – 66 tons for each

hour of flight

OZONE AND THE SST

83 tons of H2O, 207 tons

CO2, 3 tons CO, 3 tons NO

enter the thin air in the

stratosphere.

SST MIGHT DO:

It might increase high

altitude cloudiness, possibly

affecting climate and giving

the sky a permanent haziness.

SST MIGHT DO:

The increased moisture

might deplete ozone

through series of

chemical reactions.

SST MIGHT DO:

Harold Johnston, achemistry

professor of the University of

California, completed calculations

which suggested that the ozone

shield was indeed threatened by the

SST fleet.

SST MIGHT DO:

NO + O3 = NO2 +

O2

RECENT FINDINGS IN

THE STRATOSPHERIC

OZONE

FINDINGS

Starting in the early

1970’s, predictions have

been made that human

activities will lead to the

diminishing of the earth’s

protective zone.

FINDINGS

The search for evidence of

downward trends of the

thickness of the ozone

layer was inconclusive

until the discovery of the

Antartic ozone hole in

1985

FINDINGS

Ozone decreases

during the Antartic

spring are now well

documented.

FINDINGS

Ozone decreases outside

the Antartic, at southern

mid-latitudes have been

reported, as well as the

heavy populated mid-

latitudes.

FINDINGS

The Antartic ozone

hole was deep and

long-lasting and

demonstrated that

1987 was not

unusual.

FINDINGS

1990 ozone hole was

also quite deep,

similar to both 1987

and 1989

FINDINGS

The area of the ozone

hole has remained

constant for the 4

years.
