CLOUD COMPUTING

By: Ca. Ashok Seth, Lucknowas@sethspro.com

WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING• Cloud computing is a natural evolution of the

widespread adoption of virtualization, service oriented architecture and utility computing. Details are abstracted from consumers, who no longer have need for expertise in, or control over, the technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them. It typically involves over-the-Internet provision of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources.

• need for expertise in, • or control over, the technology

infrastructure.

WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING

It typically involves over-the-Internet provision of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources.

VIRTUALIZATION ?

• VIRTUALIZATION is an emerging IT paradigm that separates computing functions and technology implementations from physical hardware.

• CLOUD COMPUTING, for example, is the virtualization of computer programs through internet connections rather than installing applications on every office computer

LET’S TRY THIS AGAIN… WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING?

ARE THE CLOUDS (READ: “DOUBT’S”) CLEARING NOW?

KEY FEATURES OF CLOUD COMPUTING

• Pay for what you use• Content Resides on Server(s)• Applications are processed by the server• User Centric (Service on Demand)• E-Waste

DEPLOYMENT MODELS

• Public Cloud

• Traditional Cloud Computing – resources are dynamically provisioned.

• Community Cloud

• Similar Requirement to share Infrastructure

• Hybrid Cloud

• Private Cloud

TYPES OF CLOUD COMPUTING

• SaaS - Software as Service

• Through Web Browsers- gmail and apps

• PaaS – Platform as Service

• Virtualized servers on which customer can run existing application or develop new- MS’s Azure

• IaaS - Infrastructure as Service

• Provides Grids, Clusters or virtualized servers, Networks, Storage and System Softwares.- Amazon S3,

FEATURES & BENEFITS OF CLOUD

• Instant Elasticity- Adopt to changing requirements

• Reliability- constant operation without disruption

• Virtualization- Hides technological complexities from users, Multi tenancy

• Cost Reduction

• Ease of Use

EXAMPLES OF CLOUD COMPUTING APPS

WE ARE “VIRTUALIZING” COMPUTERS TODAY

Server Virtualization• Servers spend a lot of the time waiting for a command

• One server box can have many “services” running on it at the same time

Desktop Virtualization• Use Old Desktop Computers

• Dumb Terminals or Thin Clients

GOOGLE CHROME LAPTOP

IPAD

CONS

•Security and Privacy• Internet Connection• Too Many platforms•Geographical Location• Transition time•Speed

THE CRYSTAL BALL • ISP (Internet Service Provider) will sell more than

bandwidth

• Sell processor speeds and disk storage

• Subscription-based

• Establishments will move away from the local computer

• Less need for the local processing power

• Your computing experience will be the same everywhere

• Log in gains access to all your files, resources, applications and even the same desktop background

• The allocated resources will be the same everywhere, based on your subscriptions/ISP

• NASA uses Amazon's cloud computing in Mars landing mission

• Jet Propulsion Laboratory using the company's Amazon Web Services to capture and store images and metadata collected from the Mars Exploration Rover and Mars Science Laboratory missions.

• Using AWS's cloud to operate the mars.jpl.nasa.gov website, images, videos and developments to the public quickly, without having to build and operate the infrastructure in house

• AWS enabled JPL to construct a scalable Web infrastructure in only two to three weeks instead of months. "With unrelenting goals to get the data out to the public, NASA/JPL prepared to service hundreds of gigabits/second of traffic for hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers," Amazon said.

PRECAUTIONS

• Data Ownership

• Down time issues- Loss of Business

• Data residence issues

• Security issues

• Withholding taxes

• Disaster Management
