Jesus’ Last 100 Days

Jesus Blesses the

Children

Mark 1013 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them.

Mark 1014 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.

Mark 1015 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

Mark 1016 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

First PointJesus’ attitude towards children was atypically

wonderful.

Mark 1013 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them.

Who are the “they” who bring the

children?

What were they hoping Jesus would

do?

Why did the disciples rebuke those bringing

their children?

REBUKE: A VERY Strong Word

ἐπιτιμάω (epitimaō)•This is the same word used to describe Jesus’ rebuking of the demons on several occasions.

One will search Jewish and early Christian literature in vain for sympathy toward the young comparable to that shown by Jesus.”

Second PointJesus’ invitation to children was highly

strategic.

Mark 1014 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.

In what way are children an example on

how to enter God’s Kingdom?

“The emphasis isn’t that children are humble and innocent, because sometimes they aren’t.

David Guzik

But the emphasis is on the fact that children will receive and don’t feel they have to earn everything they get.”
