James Meyer - Sermon - Meaningless

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

This was my first sermon. I wrote and delivered it to fill in my for my friend, who is the pastor at our church (www.reallylivinghamilton.org). In it I talk about my journey in understanding christian love which was a struggle since I'm more logically/mechanically minded. Ecclesiastes played a large part in the sermon. I also have a blog up at http://Walk.ingWithGod.com where I write about living a practical christian lifestyle as a husband, father, and self-employed software engineer working in corporate Canada. My sermon notes and Powerpoint slide deck will also be available there.

What about the love?

Love your neighbour as yourselfNeighbour*love=self*loveNeighbour*love=self*loveNeighbour=self\Treat your neighbour as yourself

Apostles Creed• I believe in God, the Father, almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

* that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places

On the third day Eliab the son of Helon, prince of the children of Zebulun, did offer: His offering was one silver charger, the weight whereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering: One golden spoon of ten shekels, full of incense: One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering: One kid of the goats for a sin offering: And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Eliab the son of Helon.

Does knowledge help us in our walk with God?

Psalms 131:1

LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

Isaiah 47:10b

Your wisdom and your knowledge, it has perverted you; and you have said in your heart, I am, and there is none else besides me.

Daniel 1:4

Young men in whom was no blemish, but handsome, and skilful in all wisdom, and gifted in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

Meaningless, meaningless, everything is meaningless, a chasing

after the wind

Ecclesiastes 1:16-18

I said to myself, "Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge." I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind. For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

Ecclesiastes 2:16

For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no memory for ever, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. Indeed, the wise man must die just like the fool!

Ecclesiastes 7:4

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

Ecclesiastes 7:16

Don't be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

Acts 4:13

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ordinary men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

Proverbs 1:4

To give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

• Proverbs 1:7 … fools despise wisdom and instruction.

• Proverbs 1:22 … fools hate knowledge• Proverbs 1:28-29 Then will they call on me,

but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me; Because they hated knowledge, And didn't choose the fear of Yahweh.

• Proverbs 10:14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

• Proverbs 11:9 A hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

• Proverbs 19:2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good; and he that hastens with his feet sins.

1 Corinthians 8:1b

Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.

Ephesians 3:19

… to know Christ's love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don't have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don't have love, I am nothing. If I dole out all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don't have love, it profits me nothing.

2 Peter 1:5-8

And for this reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge self control; and to self control patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

James 3:13-17

Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good life his works with meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
