forsaken (Matthew 27:46)

“It was now held that Christ actually took the place of sinners in the sight of God, and as their substitute suffered the punishment that was due to them, including, as many of the Reformers taught, the sufferings of hell.  Upon him fell all the punishment of all the sins of all the men for whom he died; against them, therefore, penal justice could have no further claim.“

William Newton ClarkeAn Outline of Christian Theology, p. 319

“that Christ should become the greatest transgressor, murderer, adulterer, thief, rebel, and blasphemer, that ever was or could be in the world.”

Martin LutherCommentary on Galatians

“But God made Him sin: that is to say that God the Father  made His innocent, incarnate Son the object of His wrath and judgment, for our sakes, with the result that in Christ on the cross the sin of the world is judged and taken away.  In this truth resides the whole logic of reconciliation.”

“Because He was ‘made sin,’ impregnated with sin, and became the very essence of sin, on the cross He was banished from God’s presence as a loathsome thing.  He and sin were made synonymous.”

“He was guilty of disobedience and rebellion, and He suffered physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This pitiful sight of an emaciated, deformed, and tormented Jesus, shriveled and twisted by sin, disgusted the Father, who then turned upon Him with the wrath of eternal vengeance!”

Synopsis: We know that Jesus bore our sins. But the false idea of his death being vicarious or a substitution is not what the Bible teaches. Passages used to support this idea are discussed makeing it clear that sin is not transferable; Jesus was not made sin, nor forsaken by His father; He was without sin and bearing our sins is about removal of sins, not transferring.
