Every day, 6,300 people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases – more than 2.3 million deaths per year. 317 million accidents occur on the job annually; many of these resulting in extended absences from work. The human cost of this daily adversity is vast and the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product each year.

•It is important to appreciate that the social and economic costs of OHS incidents are extremely high which no organization can afford.
•Planning process must include its share of OHS concerns. The safety should be addressed right from the design level. Very often the problem is our inability to anticipate issues at the beginning rather than availability of sufficient resources.
•Adoption of OHS management system is no longer an option it is an imperative.
•Employees at all levels should be made aware of the issues involved and should be encouraged to participate in OHS Management at every stage.
•Behavioral aspect in safety needs to be addressed.
