Block 5 – Lesson 1
Block 5 – Lesson 1
What do you see in the picture?
Phenomena produced on the Earth’s surface such as
rain, evaporation, humidity, temperature and wind, are
consequences of different forms of energy received from
the Sun
This energy is used by plants and some other organisms
that perform photosynthesis to manufacture food for
themselves and for other living organisms.
The Sun emits three kinds of radiations; ultraviolet rays,
visible rays and infrared rays.
There are very few ultraviolet rays, while the visible rays are
the most important for life because plants take that energy
to make their own food. Infrared rays heat the Earth, the
atmosphere and the oceans.
The greenhouse effect is the process by which heat from the
Sun is trapped in the atmosphere (as in a greenhouse for
agriculture).
Sunlight transports energy that heats the Earth. This is the
force that influences climate and weather. People began to
use gasoline and other fossil fuels in the 20th century,
increasing the emissions of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere. The “GREEN HOUSE EFFECT” has also
increased.
Recently, carbon dioxide and other gases have been
accumulating in the atmosphere. These gases trap the
energy from the Sun and keep them in the atmosphere,
overheating the Earth.
It is possible to overcome this problem by using sources of
clean energy, such as the Sun, wind and water.
