SOCIAL EVILSWhat are social evils?

An evil is usually referred to something troublesome and harmful. Social evils are issues or matters that directly or indirectly

affect one or more members of society thus harming the welfare of that society. A

society is a building block of a country. So, it can be said that social evils are destructive to the peace and harmony of a country as a whole. They breakdown the moral values of

a society and the ethnicity of a country through economic or social means.

Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS

HIV as social ProblemIt is one of the most devastating health crises of the modern times.

It affects humanity negatively from all angles.

 Demographic Issues Countries that have been badly

hit by HIV has shown a serious mortality surge and life expectancy drop in the last decade.

By 2005, 25 million people had died; and an estimated 39 million were living with HIV.

It is forth among the leading causes of death worldwide and first in sub-Saharan Africa .

Health Issues  The infected population is prone to

developing other diseases as their immune system is suppressed.

Without life saving drugs one third of children born infected with HIV die before their first birth day.

The expense for treatment is increasing on an alarming rate.

Allocation of scarce resources for the treatment of HIV can divert attention from other health issues that demand attention.

Economic Issues It affects the economic stability.

Reduction of labour force.

Allocation of resource for the treatment of the sick reduces the investment power.

Social IssuesAffects the family stability.

Death of parents result in the creation orphas.

The infected are socially alienated.

Crime Crime in Pakistan is present in various forms. Organized crime includes drug trafficking , money laundering, extortion, black marketeering, political violence, terrorism, abduction etc.

DefinitionSubstance abuse is defined as maladaptive pattern of using certain drugs, alcohol, medications, and toxins despite their adverse consequences.

Family and Drug Abuse

Family factors can contribute to intensifying drug abuse. (traumatic parental absence, harsh discipline, failure to communicate on emotional level, etc.)

Drug abuse has devastating effects on the family relationships.

Health problems Addictive substances alter the function of human brain and have impact on behavior

Economic Effects Money for treatment Drug mafia functions as parallel government

Why Do People Begin Using Drugs? Some of the reasons people try

illegal drugs include: •  A desire to experiment Enjoyment of risk taking behavior  A belief that drugs solve personal,

social, or medical problems Peer pressure Glamorization of drugs by the media  A desire to escape boredom or

depression

CrimeProduction, manufacture and distribution of a drug is a crime.

Mafias indulge in crimes.

The abuse generally promote other non drug crimes.

MITIGATION OF SOCIAL EVILS A number of steps have been taken by

the government and many organizations to abolish the prevalent social evils.

Many laws have been implemented for the prevention of these acts. But the common people have a role to play.

The first step towards mitigation is PUBLIC AWARENESS.

The public should be aware to report of any such incidence o the respective authority.

The victim must raise the voice and resist such acts. Many other such simple steps by a society as a whole can mitigate the social evils and make social life happier.
