Time To Think Beyond TraditionalLeadership in the New Millennium
Dr. Philip E. Burian, CM, CMQ/OEMay 12, 2015
Current State of Leadership
• Numerous definitions (a cornucopia)
• Thinking is about today and barely past tomorrow afternoon (we call it strategic planning)
• Focus on styles and types (astrological sign)
• Metrics and Numbers (live by the numbers, die by the numbers)
• Squeeze every bit of life out of everything to maximize earnings (process improvement)
• Difficult to delineate between leadership and management (organization chart)
Many leadership training and development programs are designed along the lines of the style approach (Northouse, 2016)
Leadership Defined
The ability of a superior to influence thebehavior of subordinates and persuade them
to follow a particular course of action(Barnard,1938)
A process whereby an individual influences a groupof individuals to achieve a common goal
(Northouse, 2016)
Leadership is the blending of vision, values, and contribution to
society, turning ideas into reality throughothers that share the same vision (Burian, Maffei, Burian &
Pieffer, 2014)

Which tie should I wear with this leadership theory?

Leadership Research
• Narrow and focus is on slice of time
• Needs to consider traditional, behavioral and decision-making aspects and dynamic models
• Quantitative/statistical studies that are difficult to relate to reality and practice
• Lots of room for additional research and discovery
Looking Beyond the Same Old Way
• More global thinking (not in Kansas anymore Dorothy)
• A solid set of personal and organizational values (if it comes down to values and skills choose values)
• Integrate innovation and creativity (must become second nature)
• Dealing with implacable people, situations, and events (must be able to deal with a wide range of people and challenges)
We must still have an understanding of the traditional aspects of leadership, but we must look beyond in order to meet future challenges. Today, leaders spend
most of their time performing traditional management functions and not leading
