Objective

The overall objective of theMAKE-IT project is to understandthe role of Collective Awareness Platforms (CAPS) inenabling the growth and governance of the Makermovement, particularly in relation to using and creating social innovations and achieving sustainability. The results ofthis research will help to understand the uses and impactsof CAPS in different contexts, as well as of the Makermovement itself.

Questions

● How can Maker communities achieve sustainability andorganize themselves?

● What do Maker participants do, and how do theybehave?

● What value do they create, and how does this benefitsociety?

● How can we help their governance, their impact andsustainability?

Framework

Approach

Work Packages

1. Case studies

1. Fab Lab Barcelona (Spain)

2. Mini Maker Faire Tartu (Estonia)

3. HappyLab (Austria)

4. Fab Lab Zagreb (Croatia)

5. DTI ecosystem (Denmark)

6. Arduino (Italy)

7. Smart Bending Factory (Netherlands)

8. Dezentrale Dortmund (Germany)

9. Fab Lab Zagreb (Croatia)

10. HRW Fab Lab (Germany)

2. Technology scenarios

We investigate the state-of-the-art of:

1. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) andrelated applications developed and/or used by CAPS

2. Maker technology developed and/or used by Makers. This will include the relationships and mutualcomplementary of the two.

3. Furthermore, we develop forward scenarios and awatching brief of these two technology areas and howthey are used by CAPS and Maker communities bothrespectively and in combination.

3. Action research

As opposed to classical analytical research, action research can solve current practical problems whilst at the same timefurthering our scientific knowledge through a reflectiveprocess of working with practitioners.

We will adopt two approaches to action research:

1. knowledge transfer through sharing and discussions inorder to help solve problems and

2. implementing CAPS-technology enhancements as anactive and reflective process of working together withmaker communities.
