Women began to smoke cigarettes in the 1920s but not in large numbers until after the Second World War, by which time they were smoking 3.4 cigarettes per adult female per day. Consumption continued to increase until it reached 7.2 cigarettes per day in 1974; it then declined to 5.1 cigarettes per day in 1987

Tobacco was first introduced in the USA in the sixteenth century when it was commonly smoked in pipes by men. Later snuff-taking and cigar smoking became popular among men but it was the invention of cigarette-making machines in the latter part of the nineteenth century that made mass consumption of tobacco possible.By 1919, more tobacco was sold

as cigarettes than in any other form. At first only men smoked cigarettes and their consumption rose steadily until 1945, when it peaked at 12 manufactured cigarettes per adult male per day.

It's estimated that trillions of cigarette filters, filled with toxic chemicals from tobacco smoke, make their way into our environment as discarded waste yearly.

Five trillion cigarette filters weigh approximately 2 billion pounds.

While they may look like white cotton, cigarette filters are made of very thin fibers of a plastic called cellulose acetate. A cigarette filter can take between 18 months and 10 years to decompose.

How to quit smoking???

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five Stop smoking medication aids all of which are effective. Among these four are nicotine replacement therapies like gum, inhaler, nasal spray and patches which relieve the smoker of withdrawal symptoms and cravings for cigarette without the dangers of carbon monoxide, tar and carcinogens.
