The Industrial Health Council has a rich history of working with employers to keep employees healthy. IHC began in 1947 and rapidly grew into a nationwide mobile medical screening company. Recently, some news articles from 1957 to 1972 were found archived in the IHC files. We decided to share a few with you.

*1957

Members of the IHC Board voted on new directors and reported that almost 60,000 tests were performed throughout the prior year. Of those employees tested, 2381 were referred to their personal physician due to an abnormality.

In 1957, ten years after its formation, the Industrial Health Council proudly moved to the sixth floor of the Public Health Building in Birmingham Alabama.

This article outlines some of the previous year’s accomplishments and highlights Clyde E. Hagler’s re-election as president for a second term in 1958.

The Industrial Health Council’s growth is evident as this article points out reporting that 93,000 tests were conducted in the prior year on over 17,000 employees.

Over 17,000 employees were tested by IHC with 10% of these workers found to have varying ailments.

*1960

The Birmingham News reported in April of 1960 that health screens for workers produced results. Over 1100 workers were referred to their physicians for previously undetected illnesses.

The Industrial Health Council makes big news in November of 1961 as they finish a week long tour of testing employees of companies throughout Alabama. The article states “they can maintain their mass-production average on the road as well as in town.”

For two weeks during 1961, IHC offered testing to residents of Fairfield, Graysville, Leeds and Morris. Tests such as blood pressure, serology for syphilis, blood sugar and x-rays were offered. Executive Director Leroy Holt was quoted, “It is felt that we also would be rendering a real service to the general public by aiding in the prevention of spreading diseases.”

“Good Health is Good Business” was the motto of the Industrial Health Council.

The Industrial Health Council assisted in delivering the Sabin oral polio vaccine in 1963.

This article from February of 1964 states: “The IHC is believed to be the only such private service of its kind in the United States…”

*1965

This article from April 1965 reports the number of screening tests conducted the previous year as well as abnormalities detected.

*1966

Industrial Health Council reports that the number of screening tests conducted increased for the previous year.

*1967

This write-up from the Social Security Administration Newsletter reports that their employees took advantage of such tests as chest x-rays, urinalysis, electrocardiograms and hearing tests.

In 1967, IHC added a new vehicle and celebrated 20 years of industrial health related screening services.

The following question was asked of Dr. Joseph G. Molner: “How dependable are these mobile units that come around taking chest x-rays?” His answer: “Very dependable.” Dr. Molner went on to say, “The mobile units do not attempt to decide whether you do or do not have tuberculosis, lung cancer or any other disease. They merely undertake to tell you (or rather your doctor) that some abnormality appears to exist.”
