Our ambition is simple: to improve health and wealth in the Leeds City

Region by translating ideas into new medical technologies

Aims

• Develop a network of excellence in medical technology, bringing together academics, clinicians, companies, and representative organisations

• Identify and respond to un-met clinical, patient, and market needs which improve care or quality of life

• Provide sector specific expertise and support to identify, progress, and pursue key projects and areas of interest

• Develop and embed a sustainable innovation development programme for academics within our five partner universities

We translate: the academic ideas and inventions from our five university partners into commercial opportunities and clinical applications

We translate: clinical and commercial needs into industry-inspired collaborative research

We translate: cutting-edge innovation processes into bespoke skills development programmes

Project Support

• Translate supports the identification, translation, and adoption of medical technologies in our five partner Leeds City Region Universities

• Translate provides:– Sector specific translational support and expertise which complements existing BDM

staff– Links with national organisations, clinicians, patient groups, and industry– Knowledge of clinical/market trends and drivers– Partner identification and development of collaborative project teams– Funding identification and application support– Mitigation of risks and barriers- IP and regulatory requirements– Validation of clinical needs, proof of market, and project planning

Collaborative Research and Innovation

• Develop and provide access to networks of academic, clinical, and industry partners

• Utilise our relationships with regional and national medical technology programmes and initiatives to identify sector drivers and un-met clinical needs

• Develop new collaborative innovation opportunities by holding unmet need workshops, which build on partner strengths and are aligned to national and regional demands:

– Assistive technology– Wounds– Digital health– Obesity and healthy lifestyles– Musculoskeletal– Orthopaedics

Skills Development

• Development of a collaborative and harmonised sustainable innovation development programme for academics within our five partner universities

• Secondment and mentoring opportunities to enhance commercial awareness amongst academics or to enable further project progression

• Formation of academic ‘innovation champions’ to share their skills and experience with other academics

Contacted by academic with a project idea and potential international collaborators

Supporting further development of the project:• Funding identification and application support• Market analysis and patent landscaping• Arranging a clinical consultation workshop with patients and healthcare

professionals• Identifying additional project partners as required

Technologies for wound care diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare professional training

Case Study – Project Support

Supported a £800K+ application for an EPSRC Healthcare Impact Partnership award

Provided support with completing key sections of the application• Pathway to impact/commercialisation strategy• Success metrics and market opportunity, seeking input from our partners

Provided a letter of support, with a commitment of £15-20K in kind funding for assistance in the future:

• Medical device regulatory process • Clinical input and access to organisations • Market opportunity analysis• IP landscaping and freedom to operate• Commercialisation planning and business case development • Seeking investment and co-development partners • Organising/running workshops, focus groups, and partner engagement events
