Carbohydrates• Also known as sugars and starches

(glucose, fructose and sucrose). Are the principle energy source for our bodies.

• We need adequate carbohydrate stores for our bodies to function properly.

• Travel in our blood and stored in muscles as Glycogen.

Protein• Made up of Amino Acids. • Amino acids are the building blocks of

our bodies. Making up muscle, organs and tissues.

• The body stores protein for muscle growth, excess protein is converted to fat and stored.

• The body only uses protein as a main energy source if it is in distress.

Where can we get Protein from?

Fats and Oils• There are “good” (unsaturated) fats and

“bad” (saturated) fats.

• Saturated tend to come from animal products and unsaturated from plants.

• It is important to regularly consume fat in your diet.

Sources of Fat• Which of these are saturated fats and

which are unsaturated?

Dietary Fibre• Dietary Fibre is derived from plant foods

only. Lentils, beans, cereals, fruit and vegetables.

• It speeds up the rate of bowel movements and increases the bulk of faeces.

• It is also said to prevent many diseases, in particular cancer.

Vitamins• Vitamins are found in most of the foods we eat. • Keep metabolism regular and help release

energy from digested foods.• Allow the body to process carbohydrates, fats,

and proteins. • Some vitamins also help the body produce blood

cells, hormones, chemicals and genetic material.

VITAMINS• Help prevent diseases.

• Vitamins also help protect the body from heart disease and cancer.

• There are 13 well-identified vitamins.

Vitamins• Fat soluble:

- Include vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K.

• Water soluble:

- Include the B group vitamins and vitamin C C.

B Group Vitamins• Thiamin

• Riboflavin

• Niacin

• Pantothenic acid

• Biotin

• Vitamin B6

• Folate (sometimes called folic acid)

• Vitamin B12

Minerals• Minerals are inorganic substances, this

means we don’t get them from plants or animals, minerals come from the earth

• 14 minerals have been shown to be critical to human health.

Essential Minerals• These minerals are:

- calcium

- chromium

- copper

- fluorine

- iodine

- iron

- magnesium

- manganese

- molybdenum

- phosphorus

- potassium

- selenium

- sodium

- zinc

Your Task:• Create a fact sheet containing information on 3 vitamins or 3 minerals (If you choose B group, pick 1 e.g. B12)

• Your fact sheet should include:- Role and sources of the vitamin.- Where it is stored- Facts about deficiency of the vitamin- Recommended amounts of the vitamin- Consequences' of too much- Extra information

• Extra points for presentation and additional points• Assessment will be peer and teacher based (rubric).
