"Building a Spiritual Yogic Practice to Neutralize
Stress"
“I don’t have time”
• Yoga and/or meditation takes practice
• It’s concept is different from “nap time”
• This can be done without religious comit
• I’m not flexible• I can’t sit still• I take care of kids
I can’t believe what has happened!
• Once exposed, benefits painful to miss
• Mental clarity produces efficiency of mind
• The concept of freezing time exists• Medicines can be stopped• Productivity efficient w/o stress
response• Events are witnessed from a different
perspective
• “When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds: Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and your discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.” Patanjali
The science
• Stress releases cortisol rapidly during stress and slow decrease after termination
• Stress decreases perfusion to the frontal brain and increases hind brain flow
• Stress hormones will affect a developing fetus to be used to stress as “normal”
• Love will activate the “reward center” in the brain and send impulse to spine (block pain)
Practicing Stillness
• May not turn on love but it will turn off reaction to stress
Carl Jung
• “As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.”
Who are you?
• MD? DMD? PhD? JD? FACSM?, CEO?• 100,000.00 car?• A building with your name on it?• A website called facebook?• The Packers?
Started in childhood…..
• Influences to fit in, be like everyone• Peer pressure, what other people
think of me is important• If you are not liked, you wont be
happy or get anything you want• Ambition means I accumulate more, I
have the highest score, I have the state record, have the most sex, have the most texts or hits on youtube…..
…..carried into adulthood
• Concepts that what you are is what you have.
“Staying Power”
There is no pill that maintains • If who you are is what you have,
what you don’t have –”you are not”.• People get worried if I don’t maintain,
I will not be __________.• Then midlife comes when you
can’t!!!• Energy is spent to maintain that idea.• A lot of energy! Almost a
compulsion!
• Midlife brings feelings that coping skills, personal ways to get things done, being in a social position are the correct ways to live a fulfilled life.
• The Constructs learned in childhood are unable to be released in adulthood and true inner development is bypassed
Matthiew Ricard
• “Compulsive Afflicting Emotions” • One idea leads to another• We learn to react to ideas instead of
just watching them
Free your mind!
• Focusing and finding who you are instead of what people think will free up energy
• Less high blood pressure• Less depression• Less ulcer medicine• Less sleep medicine• Less super cialis!
The mechanics of how practice may help• The 5 senses• Ritual• Sacred space• Breath• Yoga (moving meditation)
Smells to Induce Thought
• Cinnamon• Nutmeg• Menthol• Eucalyptus• Frankinsence• Sandalwood• Peppermint
Sound is healing
• Mozart• 39dB in an office (Esther Sternberg)
• Indigenous instruments to induce alpha;
gong bowls flute digeridoo
Affects of sound on waterSound will effect stability
So can prayer and meditaiton
Healing sounds-Mantra?
• Words from an ancient language Sanskrit
• Some syllables “male” other “female”
• Combination stimulates different sides of the brain
• Repetition allows concentration on the word, sound, phrase or prayer (Benson)
• What happens when attention is focused?
Ahum
Breath sounding
• Ujjayi- Hold the mirror in front of your mouth Deep breath in through the nose Fog the mirror with out breath Now pretend a small mirror is in throat Fog the mirror with in breath Repeat
Color makes you feel good
• Full spectrum sun light major tx for SAD
(Esther Sternberg NIH)
• Mandalas
Beauty stimulates a part of the brain
• Beautiful places stimulate the parahippocampal cortex-associated with a dense area of opiod receptors (a theory by Beiderman University of Southern Cal 2006 American Scientist)
• Theory of why we like to see a beautiful view to get the opiod effect
• Viewing picture of romantic partner Pain
Healing spaces
• Roger Ulrich 1984 gallbladder surgery
• Patients who had a grove of trees needed
less pain medicine discharged quicker less negative progress notes from
staff launched the field of evidence based
design
…………
before
after
All the above make you feel good!
• Yielding creative thinking• Stronger immune system• Better procreation• More mindful interpretation of the
senses in turn making you feel good…etc
Happiness

Physiologically what happens…
• A “parasympathetic tunnel” (Saguil)
• Essentially to overwhelm the sympathetic response (there can be only one)
• Engage the vagus nerve• Endorphines, dopamine, oxytocin• An ascending spiral to consciousness
Self hypnosis and 1* asthma sx• Ron Ambar NY Decreased
inflammatory process in the airways self hypnosis and asthma
• Of 72 patients (ave 11.6y/o) 82% reported improvement or resolution in symptoms in 3 years
-anxiety, asthma, chest pain, dyspnea, habit cough, hyperventilation, sighing, and vocal cord dysfunction
What makes you feel bad
• Darkness• Loud sounds (bible-”Joshua’s army
used horns to strike fear into the people of Jericho”)
• Witnessing bad events• Ammonia/gasoline/sulfur/tobacco• Certain tastes (depending on the
dosha)
There is purpose to Fight or Flight
• Run from sabertooth tiger• Get away from burning building• Defend from assault• Protect the innocent (Dragnet)
• Hunt for food!!!!• Focused attention
….then get on with life.
• Daily stress response will lead to disease
• Body is not made to function 24/7 like Jack Bauer (24 Fox)
• So do people who don’t practice mindfulness get disease? Answer:________
• So do people who do practice mindfulness stay healthy? Answer:________
Abuse and Inflammatory Rx
• Nurses Health Study II -dose response relationship to abuse with existing hypertension
Women experiencing forced sexual activity as a child had a 20% increase risk for developing hypertension as an adult (indep of bmi)
Stress
• Coined by Hans Selig from physicists friends in the 1930’s
• Actually traced the stimulation of the HPA axis making stress an immunologic response
Chain of events
1. Hypothalamus2. Pituitary3. Adrenal4. Epi + Nor epinephrine, adrenaline5. Cortisol (antiinflammatory hormone)6. Resultant effect of the hormones on all
other cells in the body7. Like the immune cells (muted fight) 8.
infection cancer chromosomal aging
No one is bulletproof
• The universe goes on with or without us
• A wise man said –”Sh_t happens”.• Worrying about worse case scenario- if it doesn’t happen- you just suffered
without reason. if it does happen- you just lived it
twice (Michael J Fox on his parkinsons).
Most hospitals close down integrative medical practices due to lack of reimbursement
• Mutual of Omaha saved 30,000 per patient in the first year of “Integrative Approach”
• Strides are in place to make reimbursement for diet, yoga and group but until then You are on Your Own!
• So get the practice and education and blossom with what you feel and those around you that “heal”
Dean Ornish Program
• Most predictive of reversal of heart disease in Lifestyle Heart Trial study was the yoga/group interaction. (the more yoga the more heart disease reversal)
• Now covered by medicare for patients with heart disease since summer 2010 (we’ll see!)
• Took 16 years
Ornish’s efforts based on:
• The fundamental drive in medical practice is reimbursement not science
• We get paid to do what we get trained to do
• ie 2009=100,000,000,000 $ spent on bypass and angioplasty and they don’t prolong life or prevent heart attacks in those that get them
• Met with medicare 1994 but denied until he had dinner with Bill Clinton and started the acts to get approval (partial with only his program covered)
Practicing spirituality/mindfulness
• Helps manage your responses• Helps to keep reasoning “Neutrally” for
those around you in times of stress• Allows the human body to perform at its
maximum potential• Creates milieu of peaceful homeostasis• Must be created to offset the new
millenium stress of information/abrupt no-remorse response/emotional detachment to humanity (ego based living-non compassion)
Without practice some attain a level of spirituality
• Loss of a loved one• Near death experience• Major life change (midlife crisis,
retirement)
*essentially anything that brings awareness to a point of non interference by the ego gives mental clarity and the ability to hear what the heart is saying
The Shift
• Family• Independence• Career• Fitting in• Attractiveness
• Personal growth• Self esteem• Spirituality• Happiness• Generosity

The Shift
• Realization comes that the “source” you come from is awesome, the divine source created you with no expectations for payback
• To eventually realize there is no payback for us….
• We start to trust in divine source and as well trust there is a path already planned
• Detaching from goals allows more freedom, less fighting the need to get it done, more accepting that it will be done and creativity blossoms with the release of that tight hold and focus
• Focus on making life better for someone else
• Attention goes to how may I serve, not being attached to outcome
• Morning “rule”s are helpful for existing in society
afternoon “rules” are more connecting to an energy you are connected to in control of everything
God Realization Meher Baba
• Realization that you come from “creation/or”
• Something that divine must be in you – Oneness with God
• Move away from ego• From a sense of entitlement to a sense of
humility (were not entitled to anything)• Things you want for yourself, you begin to
say how can I want them for someone else
Death
• Death or experience of it sparks a contemplation of mortality that begins the journey to spiritual enlightenment
• The ego makes us direct efforts to see something as being taken away and to harness all effort to keep from getting to that point (plastics, risky behavior, inappropriate endeavors, separation from duty/family)
Hard data showing effects of meditation and practicing mindfulness• Andrew Newberg UofP (How God Changes Your Brain) shows Tibetan Meditation
and Fransican prayer increased prefrontal cortex and amygdala. (spect scan)
• Richard Davidson UofWisconsin two weeks of meditation with amateurs yielded positive results in the insula and immune system (fMRI)
• Davidson, Jon Kabat Zinn UMass Meditation reduced 35% of medical symptoms and 40% psychological symptoms (stable over 4 years)
• JKZinn administered the influenza vaccine to newly taught meditators (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and nonmeditators. Serum antibody levels had a significantly greater rise in titers than controls
• Davison’s functional MRI shows that stress equates to activity in the amygdadal and the right prefrontal cortex/ by contrast when in a positive mood, activity is in the left prefronal cortex concluding:
-people who meditate may strengthen an array of neurons in the left prefrontal cortex that inhibits messages that drive disturbing emotion
Quantum science
• We all come from one source• Physical expression of the source
yields varieties of forms• With the variety of human
biopsychosocial forms comes a variety of treatments for imbalance
• People cannot be “pigeon holed” into one treatment protocol
How does yoga stimulate the relaxation response?• Yama• Niyama• Asana• Pranayama• Pratyahara• Dharana• Dhyana• Samadhi
The asana
• The value comes in the space between asanas, breath, thoughts where one cultivates ideas of the universe
• When you understand your part in a greater field of energy, everything you do expresses the universe
The Pranayama
• “Soham” – diaphragm, spine, nostrils
• “The Bridge”
Deepaks approach
• Primordial sound• 30 minutes of meditation twice a day rpm + pms
Herbs approach
• Word sound or phrase• Mini’s• Regularity
“We are not alone”
• A 2007 national Government survey that asked about CAM use in a sample of 23,393 U.S. adults found that 9.4 percent of respondents (representing more than 20 million people) had used meditation in the past 12 months—compared with 7.6 percent of respondents (representing more than 15 million people) in a similar survey conducted in 2002
Why seek out a deeper message to this yoga anyway?
• 2009 = 8000.00 per american Kaiser 2009
• 2013 = 13,387.00 projected ”dieease oriented
model healthcare”
The Saguil Approach to our Future
• “Measuring just blood pressure as an outcome is a very course test” (Esther Steinburg)
• True Yoga extends beyond the mat• Inner feeling, person, outer
expression, home, community, state, country, nation, world.
• Save one life, save the world (The Talmud)
