Cementum is the part of peridontium

The PeridontiumThe Peridontium provides the support necessary to maintain teeth in function ,consist of four principle components:-GINGIVA -PERIODONTAL LIGAMENT-CEMENTUM-ALVEOLAR BONE

CEMENTUMCementum is the calcified, avascular mesenchymal tissue that forms to outer covering of the anatomic root.

-It begins at the cervical portion of the tooth at the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and continues to the apex.

-Cementum furnishes a medium for the attachment of collagen fibers that bind the tooth to surrounding structures.

Classification:1)Based on Presence or Absence of Cells:--Acellular Cementum(primary)-Cellular Cemuntum (secondary)

2)Based on Fibers:--Extrinsic-Intrinsic

3)According to above findings cementum classified as:--Acellular Afibrilar Cementum-Acellular Extrinsic Fiber Cementum-Cellular Mixed Stratified Cementum-Cellular Intrinsic Fiber Cementum

INTERMEDIATE CEMENTUM•It is a thin ,amorphous layer of hard tissue approximately 10 micron thick.

•Frequently seen in the apical two third of the roots of posterior teeth .

•Rarely seen in incisors or primary teeth.

•This type of cementum does not exhibit the characteristics features of either dentin or cementum ,while regard to its location, it is found intermediate between cementum and dentin.
