What is the meaning of Leisure? A period which you spend doing things other than your
work. A period of recuperation, or time to be filled after work was
done.
Importance of Leisure: Bring about a positive flow of energy in a person Help to refresh the mind
+What’s part of leisure
Recreation activities Active - Sports, strength exercises Passive – Games, walks
Cognitive activities Reading, spiritual education, puzzles
Social activities Dancing, singing, playing cards,
Daily life activities Eating, sleeping, cooking, cleaning,
Others Watching TV, playing an instrument, gardening,
tourism, etc.
+Two types of recreation
Active recreation Is about engaging in adventure sports or outdoor
games Have physical resistance
Hiking Biking Skiing
Passive recreation Involves activities such as taking a walk on the
riverside, walking on the beach, strolling in parks or taking nature walks Very little or no physical resistance activities
+Importance of Recreation
Devoting some time for recreation on a daily basis helps in the long run in maintaining health and achieving a peace of mind. Participate in some regular physical activity, play a sport or exercise. These recreational activities serve as a means of relaxation. Research has shown that recreation on a daily basis reduces risks of diabetes and hypertension, enhances physical and mental health and improves the quality of life. (Oak, 2010)
+Physical Activity
Some of the benefits of regular physical activity include: Improved fitness and quality of life; Better physical and mental health; More energy and reduced stress; Stronger muscles and bones; Better posture and balance; and Prolonged independent living in later life.
