Shopping for healthy, affordablefood can be a real challenge. With

so many options, it’s a groceryjungle out there! Let’s explore

some tips to help you navigate.

Good news: Frozen produce andlean meats are typically just asnutritious as fresh options —

sometimes even more so.

FreshThink in-season.

Buying fresh gives you the luxury of nothaving to look for those unwanted addedingredients that you would typically find withcanned and frozen varieties.  Fruits such asberries and watermelon are especially fresh inthe summertime, so make sure to stock up! Plan at least one meal this week usingmainly fresh produce.

FrozenRead your labels!

When shopping frozen, try to avoid saucesand flavoring that contain unwanted fats,sugar and sodium. You can add your ownspices later, so you know what you’re eating. For convenience and practicality, stock up onfrozen dark green veggies like spinach, swisschard, and collards. These are great nutrient-boosters for throwing into soups, casserolesand sautees.

CannedAvoid unwanted additives.

Canned food is often given a bad name. ItCAN be a good option. Check the label.Avoid sodium/salt and sugar that often isadded in the canning process. For example, gofor the “tuna in water” and the “no-salt-added-tomatoes." And when possible — checkfor BPA-free labels.
