Generation of Plastic Waste Human being generally generate plastic

and utilize it for different purposes. Today, every vital sector of the economy

starting from agriculture to packaging, automobile, building construction, communication or InfoTech has been virtually revolutionized by the applications of plastic.

But after its use, the plastic material can not be disposed off properly.

Utilization of Disposed Plastic

This disposed plastic is considered as a waste. Generally this type of waste plastic is collected, re-

circulated and recycled by the local scrap dealers. Now-a-days this waste plastic can be used for

different fields…as below..

• Irrigation temporary pipes(Black colour) • For manufacturing of chappals, sandles & Gum boots

for poor people.

So….

After looking that…..

A question arisen in my mind… ….As a civil engineer

That….Can this plastic waste be utilized in construction industry as a material

?????

Yes !!!It can be.…

Plastic waste can be utilized in Civil engineering………..

…..For the construction of …. “Roads”

Advantages of Plastic Road… Reduce need of Bitumen by

around 10%. For 1Km.X 3.75m. road,1 ton

of Plastic(10 lack carry bags) is used and 1 ton of bitumen is saved.

Strength & Performance of road increased by 100%.

No effect of radiation like UV.

Better resistance to water & water stagnation.

No stripping & no potholes. No leaching of plastic.

Reduce cost to around Rs.5000/Km of single lane road.

Maintenance cost is almost nil.

Good skid resistance & good texture of road.

Generate job for rag pickers.

Disposal of plastic waste will no longer be a problem.

BENEFITS OF WASTE PLASTIC ROADS Environmental Benefits. MSWM (Municipal Solid Waste

Management) Employment Generation. Farming Community. National Economy.

Environmental Benefits Today, plastic waste

treatment is largely hazardous to the environment as most of the plastic is burnt resulting is toxic gases being released in the environment.

By effectively managing the collection, separation& processing of plastic waste, the environmental damages can be limited by eliminating the waste from our streets.

We can have international standard roads and pavements which are litter free.

MSWM (Municipal Solid Waste Management)

House hold & other units wrap all garbage into plastic bags &dispose them. The non-biodegradable plastic bags act like covering on garbage preventing it from being converted into compost. At present only 20% of MSW is converted into compost. This can be considerably increased to 80-85% & more by systematically managing the plastic waste.

National Economy This will help for employment

generation & for agricultural efficiency. When life of road is doubled, then the savings that occur to the national exchequer are in thousands of crore.

The Central Government annual allocation of funds towards roads & highways is approx. 35 thousand crores.

Waste Minimisation and Infrastructure Improvement

India spends Rs 35,000 crores a year on road construction and repair, including

Rs 100,000 crores a year just on maintenance.Roads lasting 2-3 times longer, will save us

Rs 33,000 crores a year in repairs, plus reduced vehicle wear and tear.

8% by weight of plastic waste in bitumen = a saving of 0.4% of bitumen by weight in roads.

Negligible extra cost for far better infrastructure.

Waste Plastic Bituminous Road V/s Ordinary Bituminous Road

Plastic will increase the melting point of bitumen.

Use of this innovative technology not only strengthened the road construction but also increased road life.

Help to improve environment. Plastic road will be a “boon” for India’s hot

and humid climate where durable and eco-friendly roads which will relive the earth from all type of plastic waste.

CONCLUSION

Especially in India, where temperatures frequently cross 50°C and torrential rains create havoc, leaving most of the roads with big potholes, plastic roads will be a eco-friendly gift.

Bitumen can be replaced by waste plastic which is required for road construction and its use can be substantially reduced to 10%.

And obviously the savings in construction of is huge.

Applying this eco-concept will help to improve the world.

New Thinking & New Possibilities

We can’t imagine the world without plastic…

And from now we should have to start looking at plastic as sustainable resource rather than a waste.

The Govt. has to take initiative & make the use of waste plastic mandatory…

GO GREEN !!!Use waste plastic as a resource !!!

Using such innovative

idea we can help the

world unintentionally !!! Save Nature !!!

THANK YOU
