CCAFS East Africa

Bridging the science-policy gap through CANA

About CCAFS

CCAFS is a research collaboration

between the CGIAR and the global

climate change community.

Objectives

• Identify and develop pro-poor

adaptation and mitigation

practices, technologies and

policies for agriculture and food

systems

• Support the inclusion of agricultural

issues in climate change policies,

and of climate issues in agricultural

policies, at all levels

Test and scale up technologies and practices that are needed to build adaptive capacity and food security, document

mitigation co-benefits of technologies & practices

Adaptation and food security policies largely at national level, but also global level. Modelling, scenario assessment and

policy analysis will provide the information & tools for decision-makers

Flagship 1:

Climate-smart agricultural practices

Flagship 3: Low-emissions

agricultural development

Flagship 2:

Climate information services and climate-informed safety nets

Flagship 4:

Policies and institutions for

climate-resilient food systems

GHG measurement challenges in small-scale farming systems, trade-offs and synergies amongst adaptation, food security

and mitigation, incentives for mitigation actions, policy options in agriculture for climate change mitigation and low-

emissions development

Deliver improved farmer advisories, better management of safety nets and enhanced design of the weather-indexed

insurance working closely with climate scientists, meteorological services, and humanitarian agencies

CCAFS East Africa

• Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and

Tanzania

• Integrating CCAFS research

across local, national and regional

scales

• Six sites across the 4 countries:

• Borana (ET)

• Wote and Nyando (KE)

• Hoima and Rakai (UG)

• Lushoto (TZ)

• Site selection - farming systems,

risk profile, and represent areas

that are becoming both drier or

wetter.

Our Work Across Scales

• National - working with the ministries of Agriculture and

Environment to develop and implement climate change policies

and strategies in the agricultural sector

• Regional - working with COMESA in 5 countries in ESA:

Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda and Tanzania to prepare

country CSA Programs as a coordinated programmatic approach

to catalyzing climate finance and investments into the agriculture

sector

• Continental - supporting the African Group of Negotiators

(AGN) to integrate agriculture into climate change issues under

the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

(UNFCCC) through scientific evidence

Need for knowledge sharing and networking

All the efforts above yield new knowledge and experiences thus

creating new avenues for collaboration – implying the need to create a

platform for sharing knowledge

• In 2011, CCAFS EA launched a Regional Learning Partnership (RLP)

(16 African based organizations) to help mainstream research into

national policies, development plans and targeted local action

• In 2012, the RLP identified the need for an online knowledge platform

• Through the RLP, the Rockefeller and Pamoja Media approached

CCAFS EA to collaborate and develop an online platform.

• In 2014, a survey undertaken to get feedback on the content and

design of the platform, to share and access information on Africa’s

agriculture in the context of a changing climate

CANA was officially launched in 2014 at COP 20 in Lima, Peru at the CCAFS official side event on Climate-smart agriculture innovations to increase food security and rural incomes under

climate change

CANA Partners

• Successful development of the online knowledge sharing

platform is a result of the collaboration between:

CCAFS

Rockefeller Foundation

Pamoja Media

COMESA

• 26 partners are currently engaged in the platform, ranging

from research institutions, NGOs, regional economic

communities, and universities

CANA Themes

A key feature of CANA is a sub-page fully

dedicated to climate-smart agriculture (CSA)

Conclusion

• This training workshop will build regional capacity on the

use of the platform for sharing emerging knowledge

and experiences on climate change and agriculture in

Africa

• The workshop is a great opportunity to share our

research and field work experiences, identify existing

gaps and opportunities for synergies.

• We greatly value your inputs and feedback and we look

forward to your active contribution and participation on

the platform.
